Some people believe that Pavlopetri is a unique archaeological site and is approximately 5,000 years old.
Some even associate it with the legend of Atlantis, considering it as the oldest city in the world that sank beneath the surface of the sea. This city is submerged at a depth of three to four meters, with the structures of buildings, streets, courtyards, and graves still clearly visible.
The initial discovery of Pavlopetri was made in 1967 by Nicholas Flemming, and later, in 1968, this site was mapped by a team of archaeologists from the University of Cambridge.
In 2009, scientists discovered remnants of late Neolithic pottery, indicating that this city may be around 5,000-6,000 years old.
"Amazing Discovery."
A marine geo archaeologist, Dr. Nic Flemming, said this discovery is extraordinary. The discovery of pottery shows that Pavlopetri is a very ancient port city and was involved in trade in the Mediterranean. Surprisingly, Pavlopetri is older than many other underwater cities that have been investigated, and almost all aspects of city planning, including main streets and household structures, can still be observed.
Pavlopetri is not only an interesting archaeological site, but also a window that opens a view to the history of trade and ancient life in the Greek region. The results of this research continue to reveal the secrets of the past that have been hidden beneath the sea surface.
