In the middle Cretaceous period, the climate conditions in Hebei supported life, with abundant forests and river ecosystems dominating the area which is now mostly covered by grasslands.

Like most well-preserved dinosaur fossils, the extinction of this Stegosaurus is marked by an unintended event. It is estimated that the dinosaur was drinking at the edge of a lake or river at the time of its death. Then, a force moved its body from the open land into deeper waters. After that, there appears to have been a volcanic eruption in the vicinity, burying the dinosaur and the water surface under layers of ash.

It is estimated to have originated from the Cretaceous period about 130 million years ago, this Stegosaurus is the first discovery in Northern China. Meanwhile, the fossil of the primitive ancestor of triceratops will help complete the fossil record of ceratopsida in China.

"The well-preserved bones from this specimen will provide important evidence for further studies on the evolution of primitive ceratopsid dinosaurs," explained Zhang.
