Scientists Discover Ancient Reptile Resembling Crocodile in India, Its Shape is Terrifying

Samsarasuchus pamelae roamed our planet during the Early Triassic period, 251.5 million years ago.

The ancient reptile is a member of Proterosuchidae, a small family of early archosauriforms.

Proterosuchidae is known to originate from the late Permian in Eastern Europe and the early Triassic in South Africa and China. These creatures are long-snouted reptiles that resemble crocodiles at first glance. They have a length of 1.5 to 4 meters, adapted to hear low-frequency sounds, and possibly have semi-aquatic habits. Their most distinctive feature is the clear downward bend in the front part of the upper jaw (premaxilla).

"The origin of Archosauromorpha can be traced back to the mid-late Permian period, with several occurrences in Western and Eastern Europe, the African continent, and possibly South America,"

According to paleontologist experts from the University of Birmingham, Martín Ezcurra and his colleagues.

" The presence of Permian archosauriforms implies that the origin of the major non-archosauriform archosauromorph clade must also extend into the Permian period, although Paleozoic fossil evidence is still lacking for most of these groups (e.g. tanystropheids, rhynchosaurus, allokotosaurus, prolacertids). "The only archosauromorph lineage with body fossils on both sides of the Permo-Triassic boundary defined by vertebrate fossils is Proterosuchidae," they said. "

"\u201cMembers of this clade are characterized by a low and elongated skull with a large and highly downward-directed premaxilla, a relatively long neck series, relatively graceful limb bones, and a wide range of plesiomorphic movements.\u201d"

"Premaxilla of the large-sized proterosuchid gradually becomes clearer and distinct through ontogeny, and reciprocal social and/or sexual selection may provide an explanation for the function and origin of this peculiar feature. Several fossil neck vertebrae of Samsarasuchus pamelae were discovered on January 18, 2015, from the upper Panchet Formation near the village of Deoli, West Bengal, India. The holotype and paratype specimens were found 10 meters apart at nearly the same stratigraphic level."

"We discovered Samsarasuchus pamelae as a new member of the Proterosuchidae clade, named the new subfamily Chasmatosuchinae," said the paleontologist.

"Chasmatosuchinae also includes forms from Eastern Europe, Brazil, and Australia."

“Study on Samsarasuchus pamelae and other early archosauriform bones from the Panchet Formation has enhanced our knowledge of proterosuchid, confirming the significant potential of the Indian unit to explain the mass extinction at the end of the Permian and, specifically, on the taxonomy and phylogeny of early archosauriforms,”
they add.
