The devastating tsunami that struck northern Europe over 8,000 years ago is said to be mentioned as a possible cause for the extinction of the Stone Age population in northern England.
This finding is based on the latest research results that reveal that the tsunami named Storegga, along with a sharp decline in the local population, may be a key element in that tragic history. Previously, this decline had never been linked to the marine disaster.
During the Mesolithic era, or known as the Middle Stone Age, the population in northern England was relatively small, with an estimated only around 1,000 individuals residing in the area.
The majority of the prehistoric population in England inhabited small settlements along the coastline, putting them in the potential path of large tidal waves. Archaeological data records that around 8,200 years ago, the number of residential sites in northwestern Europe suddenly decreased dramatically.
Although some researchers argue that consistent temperature drop across the continent may be the cause, there is still a discussion about whether coastal communities are directly affected by such climate events.
Interesting fact, the Storegga tsunami coincided with a mass death event that occurred approximately 8,120 to 8,175 years ago. Triggered by a large underwater landslide off the coast of Norway, this event resulted in giant waves over 20 meters (65 feet) high hitting the Shetland Islands, located north of mainland Scotland. In the southern part of northern England, wave heights reached a range of 3 to 6 meters (10 to 20 feet).
To uncover the potential impact of a tsunami on the local population, researchers conducted computer wave simulations at an important prehistoric site called Howick in Northumberland, northeast England. At this location, the discovery of sediment cores that coincided with the time of the tsunami indicated the possibility that the site was flooded during the disaster. The researchers conducted wave simulations based on two different scenarios of sea level changes. The results showed that the tsunami did not reach as far as Howick, unless it occurred during high tide.
