"Dream - A number of non-Muslim officials from India visited Madinah, Saudi Arabia on Monday, January 8, 2024. This delegation of officials was led by the Minister of Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs, Smriti Zubin Irani."
Quoted from Middle East Monitor, this is the first non-Muslim delegation to visit the holy city of the second largest Muslim community.
"Irani, a Hindu follower, accompanied by Minister of External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, and other senior officials from the ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)."
In its report, the Indian delegation met with volunteers who serve Indian Hajj pilgrims. These officials also met with Indian Umrah pilgrims.
The delegation visited the perimeter or outer boundary of the Nabawi Mosque in the Markazia area, which has long been prohibited for non-Muslims.
They also visited Mount Uhud, a historical site where a major battle took place during the early days of Islam, and visited Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islam. "The importance of visiting these sites is due to the kindness of the Saudi officials, who are connected to the early history of Islam, emphasizing the depth of our cultural and spiritual involvement," said Smriti on her X account.
The official statements from the officials involved in the visit convey that the Indian government is highly committed to assisting in providing facilities and services for Indian Muslims performing the Hajj pilgrimage, thus giving them a comfortable and satisfying experience.
Two days before this visit, India and Saudi Arabia signed a bilateral agreement in Jeddah regarding the hajj quota for 2024. India received a quota of 175,025 hajj pilgrims this year.
