Dream - The dream of a street burger seller's child to continue their studies to a higher level finally becomes a reality.
Azida Azmi or Ezzy tells a story, initially she was not confident that her application to continue her studies at Columbia University in New York, United States would be accepted. She lacked self-belief because many looked down on her. They considered Ezzy to be just a local graduate who was too ambitious.
However, who would have thought that this graduate from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) managed to secure a place to pursue his master's studies in the field of Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, according to his interest.
During six months, Ezzy prepared all the requirements to complete the application for studying abroad. "I dared to do a video call with 58 university alumni and got tips from all of them," she said.
Ezzy acknowledges various obstacles when she applied to continue her studies abroad. However, Ezzy did not expect when she checked the results, she was declared successful and accepted at Columbia University.
Furthermore, this 24-year-old woman admitted that she often accompanies her mother in selling burgers from a roadside cart for the past 20 years. Being accustomed to a tough life since childhood, this only child feels that she will continue her parents' legacy solely as a street vendor of burgers.
"I come from a humble family. Since I was young until high school, I helped my mother sell burgers. So, I am used to seeing and growing up in that kind of environment."That's why I have accepted that selling burgers will be a cycle for our family. I thought that when I am old, I will take over the business," he said. With that perspective, Ezzy felt down because he couldn't pursue higher education and ended up being a street burger seller."
Although he was once a participant in a student exchange program abroad, but at that time it was only for a short time. However, this time he truly became a student at a famous university in America. Ezzy admitted to studying in the US from August 25, 2023, until July 2025.
Before leaving to study abroad, his parents repeatedly conveyed a message for Ezzy to never miss prayers. Especially since his parents couldn't accompany him to the university's entrance. His parents admitted to being proud of Ezzy's achievements.
Ezzy, who comes from Selayang Baru, Selangor, is the first generation in his family to successfully pursue higher education. He is determined to continue his studies at Columbia University for his parents, who have worked hard to raise him since he was young. Ezzy also wants to prove that his success is a result of his parents' upbringing, even though they did not complete formal education.
While his father was able to attend school until 5th grade of elementary school. After that, he had to start working to support his family.
Ezzy returns to tell a story, previously he had been the subject of jokes among his classmates who underestimated him as a roadside burger seller.
"I remember my mother and father selling burgers from 11pm to 7am. After work, my mother would pick me up at home and take me to school," she said. Every time Ezzy hugged her mother before going to school, the smell of burgers would stick to her clothes."
In class, there was a friend who teased by saying Ezzy brought 'a foul smell' to school. "This is the most difficult moment that I want to forget until now. I am very sad to remember it. Especially when my mother is looking for a living, while others sleep soundly," he concluded.
