Recently, the research team from the Land of the Rising Sun has discovered a method to attach living skin to the face of a robot, making the smile and facial expressions of this robot more realistic. This innovation is the result of replicating the human tissue structure at the University of Tokyo.

Quoting from a BBC report, this artificial skin is made in a laboratory using living cells. According to the researchers' explanation, this skin is not only soft like real skin but can also heal itself if injured. This achievement is not without obstacles. Previous attempts to attach living skin to the robot faced difficulties. The team of scientists tried using mini hooks as anchors, but these hooks damaged the skin when the robot moved.

In humans, the skin is connected to the underlying structures through ligaments, which are small cords made of flexible collagen and elastin. To replicate it, researchers create many small holes in the robot and apply a gel containing collagen, followed by covering it with artificial skin layers. The gel fills the holes and binds the skin to the robot.

The latest discovery has been published in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science. The researchers stated that it took years to test this technology before it could be applied in everyday life. This study also has the potential to be beneficial in skin aging research, cosmetics, and surgical procedures, including plastic surgery.
