Dream - Today, May 1, 2024, is the celebration of Labor Day in Indonesia. President Joko Widodo made a special statement on Labor Day this year through his Instagram.
"Every worker is a daily hero who keeps the wheels of the economy turning. Let us continue the spirit of struggle of the workers to achieve justice and prosperity together. Happy International Workers' Day," in a post on the official Instagram account @jokowi, Wednesday, May 1, 2024."
To commemorate Labor Day, today, May 1, 2024, tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of workers are reported to take to the streets to commemorate International Workers' Day or May Day, May 1, 2024, today. Various demands are brought by many labor groups.
President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), Said Iqbal, announced that May Day 2024 will be held in every industrial city throughout Indonesia. Starting from Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, to Ternate. "More than 200 thousand people will participate in May Day across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bandung, Serang, Surabaya, Semarang, Batam, Makassar, Banjarmasin, Ternate, Mimika, and others," said Iqbal.
"For Jakarta, the action will be centered at Istana Negara from 9.30-12.30 WIB this morning. Then, around 50 thousand participants of the May Day action at Istana will move to Stadion Madya Senayan, celebrating the May Day Fiesta."
Said Iqbal explained that there are two main demands raised by the participants of May Day 2024 throughout Indonesia. Namely, the revocation of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation and HOSTUM (Remove Outsourcing Reject Cheap Wages).
Iqbal revealed that since the enactment of the Job Creation Law (UU Cipta Kerja), many companies have carried out layoffs on permanent employees and replaced them with cheaply paid outsourced employees. In addition, with the Job Creation Law, wage policies in Indonesia have become policies of low wages.
"The use of outsourcing and contracts has been massive throughout Indonesia. Almost 4 years ago, wage increases were always below inflation. Even in some industrial cities, the wage increase was zero percent," said Iqbal. He gave examples, in 2024, the wage increase in Tangerang Regency was 1.64 percent, Bekasi Regency was 1.59 percent, Karawang Regency was 1.57 percent. According to him, these increases are below the inflation rate of 2.8 percent in 2024 and below the economic growth rate of 5.2 percent."
"The policy of cheap wages has resulted in a decrease of real wages and purchasing power of labor by 30-40 percent. In other words, in the past 5 years, real wages of labor have decreased and there has been no wage increase. Meanwhile, the average economic growth has increased by 5 percent," he said.
