New research confirms that ancient remains of a headless fetus found in an Egyptian teenage mummy indicate that she died while giving birth to twins. When archaeologists excavated and unwrapped the mummy's bandages in 1908, they discovered a fetus wrapped in bandages and remnants of the placenta trapped between the girl's legs. Field notes from that time reveal that researchers concluded that the fetus was associated with the mummified woman.
A girl aged between 14 and 17 years old who lived in ancient Egypt between the Late Dynastic period (around 712 to 332 BC) and the Coptic period (between AD 395 and 642). Researchers opened the mother's abdomen and found a fetus skull trapped in the birth canal, indicating that the girl died due to complications during childbirth.
However, it was only after a century that researchers discovered the second fetus, this time in a mysterious way, trapped in the girl's chest.

"Margolis first studied mummies excavated in 1908 while writing her master's thesis in anthropology at George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C. on the morphology of the female pelvis in 2019. 'I conducted CT scans to obtain measurements of the pelvis,' said Margolis. 'That's when we discovered the second fetus.' A 3D image shows that the remains of the fetus, which had no previous record, were trapped in the girl's chest. They performed an X-ray on the mummy for clearer images of the fetal remains."

"For a new study published on December 21 in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, researchers reexamined the upper body of the mummy and the fetus outside to confirm the cause of the teenager's death. They also reviewed and compiled notes and photos taken during the excavation in 1908."
Margolis and Hunt found that the girl died while giving birth after the first fetus's head became trapped in the birth canal, Margolis said. According to the study, the fetus's head that emerges from the uterus during childbirth usually folds onto its chest to allow passage through the pelvis. The researchers believe that in this case, the fetus's head did not fold with a wide enough position to pass through and became trapped.
The translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags is as follows: The results of the 2019 analysis show that the mother in question has a height of about 5 feet (1.52 meters) and weighs between 100-120 pounds (45 to 55 kilograms). Her small size and young age may have contributed to the failed delivery of the twins, noted the researchers.

According to this research, childbirth in ancient Egypt is poorly documented, but the available records indicate that the birth of twins was considered undesirable. A papyrus from the third period (1070 to 713 BC), known as the Decree of the Oracular Amulet, offers a mantra to mothers intended to prevent the birth of twins.
