New Unique Animal Discovery, Antarctic Sea Spider with 'Boxing Glove' Claws

The strange yellow creature resembling a spider with four pitch-black eyes and large claws has been pulled from the depths of the sea off the coast of Antarctica.

The animal that has never been seen before is the sea spider, a distant relative of the rainbow crab and an arachnid that lives on the ocean floor, feeding through a proboscis similar to a straw rather than a mouth, and breathing through their legs. Scientists have discovered more than 1,000 species of sea spiders around the world.

A new species discovered, Austropallene halanychi, was pulled from the seabed in the Ross Sea, about 1,870 feet (570 meters) below the surface.

"Besides other strange things about sea spiders, this new species has large claws that resemble "boxing gloves," which are likely used to catch soft food such as anemones and worms, said Andrew Mahon, a biologist at Central Michigan University. The study was published on November 28 in the journal ZooKeys."

The body of this spider is about 0.4 inches (1 cm), but its legs stretch almost 1.2 inches (3 cm).

"This gives the species a distinctive sleek appearance typical of many sea spiders — although some species can grow larger, reaching widths of nearly 2 feet (60 cm)."
