"Darwin and his naturalist colleague, Alfred Russel Wallace, made predictions about the existence of the Sphinx Moth of Wallace that is symbiotic with orchids, which have very long nectar tubes. In 1862, Charles Darwin received Madagascar orchids by mail. Their flowers have very long nectar tubes, called nectar, measuring 1 foot (30 centimeters) in length."

The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace revealed in 1867 that some larger species of the Sphingidae moth family (also known as sphinx moths or hawk moths) have a proboscis nearly as long as the nectar of Angraecum sesquipedale.

Kedua naturalis tersebut terbukti benar ketika ngengat berlidah panjang tersebut akhirnya ditemukan di Madagaskar. Pada tahun 1903, ngengat tersebut diidentifikasi sebagai subspesies dari ngengat sphinx Morgan (Xanthopan morganii) dan diberi nama ilmiah X. m. praedikta. Penyerbukan yang diprediksi oleh Darwin dan Wallace baru dapat diamati dan difoto pada tahun 1990-an.

"Recently, this moth has been recognized as having the longest insect tongue. A taxonomic study published in 2021 concluded that this insect should be classified as a separate species and given the scientific name Xanthopan praedicta."
