Praying before drinking is a form of gratitude to Allah SWT.

Dream - For every religious person, prayer is one of the recommended practices that is always performed. The shortest prayer that can be done is to recite the phrase "Bismillah". Praying to God is certainly a way to show one's faith and belief in the Creator. Praying is also done to ask for goodness and various ease. Even in Islamic teachings, every believer is taught not to hesitate to pray to ask for all kinds of requests from their Creator.

Not only heavy activities, but regular routines should also be started with prayer, one of which is the prayer when drinking water. The teaching to praise Him is a form of gratitude to Allah SWT for the blessing of water as stated in Al Furqan verses 48-49: "And We send down from the sky pure water. That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to many of Our creation, livestock and people." (QS. Al-Furqan verses 48-49). "This verse is understood as a sign that water is a gift from Allah. In order for it to be blessed and beneficial when consumed, Muslims need to recite prayers before drinking and after drinking water."

"Prayer for Drinking Water"

Basically, the prayer for drinking water is the same as the prayer for eating. The Prophet Muhammad recommended reciting the basmallah or remembrance of Allah at the beginning of the time before sipping the drink or consuming food. Bismillahirrahmanirrahim I intend to seek healing with the blessings of the Prophet Muhammad.

Apart from the prayer mentioned above, Prophet Muhammad also advised all Muslims not to criticize food and drink. If you like the food and drink, then eat and drink immediately. Conversely, if you do not like the food and drink, Prophet Muhammad always advised to remain silent.

"Prayer After Drinking Water"
Alhamdulillâhilladzî ja‘alahû ‘adzban furâtan bi rahmatih. Wa lam yaj‘alhu milhan ujâjan bi dzunûbinâ. Translation: Praise be to Allah, who made it a pure provision by His mercy. And He did not make it a source of punishment for our sins.

Translation: "Meaning: \u201cAll praise be to Allah who has made this water fresh and clear by His mercy, and has not made this water salty and bitter due to our sins.\u201d"

Drinking Etiquette According to the Prophet's Recommendation

Intent and Reading Basmalah

The meaning of intention when about to drink is to intend to strengthen the body and maintain health. Thus, the consumed beverage will have a reward. This is as conveyed by the Prophet Muhammad SAW in the following hadith. إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى، فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ

Meaning
"A deed is judged based on its motivation (niyyah), and each person will receive what they intended. Those who migrate for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, then Allah SWT and His Messenger will reward that person. However, those who migrate for worldly reasons or to marry a woman, then they will receive that outcome."

"Using the Right Hand"

Adab minum selanjutnya yakni menggunakan tangan kanan. Baik makan ataupun minum, menggunakan tangan kanan menjadi kebiasaan yang diperintahkan Rasulullah. Sebaliknya, mengerjakan sesuatu dengan tangan kiri menjadi kebiasaan setan.

From Abdullah Bin Umar, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH said:
"If one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand and drink with his right hand. Indeed, the devil eats and drinks with his left hand."

"(HR Muslim, Abu Daud, Tirmidzi, and Ahmad)"

"Drink While Sitting"
"Prophet Muhammad SAW forbade his people from drinking while standing, this is in accordance with a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, he said:"

"Do not drink while standing. If one forgets, they should vomit it out." (HR Muslim)

"Do Not Breathe in the Glass"

Other drinking etiquette to be observed is not to breathe into the glass or blow air into it. Water can absorb odors, so if someone has just eaten strongly scented foods like onions and then breathes into the glass, the odor will transfer to the drinking water.

"Praising the Name of Allah"

After drinking, Muslims should say the phrase "hamdalah" or "Alhamdulillah" as a sign of gratitude for the blessings that Allah SWT has given.
