"A rare pink albino alligator was born at Gatorland, a wildlife park in Orlando, Florida."
The American female alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is experiencing a genetic condition called leucism, due to a gene mutation that results in reduced pigmentation in feathers, hair, or skin.
"Unlike albinism, which results in pink eyes and total loss of skin pigment, animals with leucism only experience partial pigment loss and usually have blue eyes as well as skin that is white, transparent, or pale pink. This newly hatched reptile is believed to be one of eight leucistic crocodiles in the world. They are sometimes born in the wild, but rarely survive past infancy due to health issues."
"Because leucistic crocodiles do not have normal skin pigment, they are easily burned by sunlight, so they cannot be exposed to sunlight for long periods and have a higher risk of sun damage and skin cancer. Leucistic crocodiles are also rarely seen as adults because their skin makes them easily visible to predators."
"However, this small crocodile is in good health and currently measures 19.2 inches (49 centimeters) in length and weighs 3.3 ounces (96 grams), said a park representative."
The text translates to: "This leucistic crocodile was born from a mother that does not have leucism but carries a genetic mutation for the condition and from a leucistic father."
This leucistic crocodile was born alongside a non-leucistic male that is the same size.
The color of leucistic crocodiles can change over time because, unlike albino animals, they still have genes for pigment.

A study published in 2020 describes the extraordinary findings of six 'leucistic' American alligators in South Carolina in 2014. These animals were underweight when discovered, and three of them died shortly after being collected. The remaining three alligators lived in captivity for several years until their deaths.
"They will not survive," "They are all quite thin, often have congenital health defects, and are easily detected by predators."
"said Thomas Rainwater, a research scientist at Clemson University in South Carolina."

"Rather than letting nature take its course in this case, or having hatchlings that might be hunted by reptile traders, we collected the crocodiles in an effort to care for them for better health and potentially leverage their value in education and wildlife conservation,""
