An Australian teenager was lucky to escape after being bitten by one of the most venomous animals in the world, the blue-ringed octopus. After accidentally picking up the deadly cephalopod that was hiding inside a shell. But this is not the only incident that nearly occurred and almost infected a toddler. Curious about the story? Let's take a look at the following tale!
"The blue-ringed octopus is a group that consists of four species, namely the greater blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena lunulata), the southern blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena maculosa), the blue-lined octopus (Hapalochlaena fasciata), and the common blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena nierstraszi)"
Here is the translated text with HTML tags preserved: "These small octopuses can easily fit in the palm of your hand. This octopus has tetrodotoxin or a very strong nerve poison. This toxin has no known antidote and can cause paralysis and death in humans in a short time, even if the dose is small."
"Jacob Eggington, who is eighteen years old, is swimming off the coast of Shoalwater near Perth. The incident began when he discovered a shell, unknowingly containing an unidentified species of blue-ringed octopus."
"Egginton placed the shell in his pocket and brought it ashore to show his family. When he took it out of his pocket to show it to his baby niece, he saw a blue-ringed octopus and dropped it on the floor."
Deadly Poison Tetrodotoxin.
"Tetrodotoxin is also found in several species of water lizards, frogs, and pufferfish, which works by stopping nerve signals to muscles through the blockade of sodium ion channels. This disease quickly weakens and paralyzes the muscles, including the muscles needed for breathing, which can lead to respiratory failure and death."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the effects of tetrodotoxin can occur quickly or may take hours to cause muscle paralysis. Therefore, a person can die within a time frame of 20 minutes to 24 hours after being exposed to the toxin.
"Currently, there is no known antidote for tetrodotoxin. Therefore, the actions that healthcare practitioners can take are limited to providing supportive care or using a ventilator if the patient experiences difficulty breathing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)."
