A vast fortress overlooking the village of Helfta on top of a hill in Germany was discovered to be over a thousand years old. This "enormous ring-shaped" fortress is called Helpideburg and was established around the late 8th century. Felix Biermann, an archaeologist from the Monument Preservation Office, said that this structure was constructed in the 13th century and became a "center of royal and imperial residence, military and governmental center, as well as a settlement and economic hub."
The latest discovery reveals a glimpse into the life of a palace official. A team of experts conducted excavations on two graves in the palace's outer courtyard, an area outside the internal fortress walls, in October.

Biermann explained that in the burial there were individuals who played important roles in the social and administrative structure of the Karoling fortress.
Although archaeologists do not have much data about that individual, the presence of their graves, which are located close to each other, indicates a high possibility that they were a married couple.
"Although no burial items were found for the woman, Biermann revealed that the man was buried with a number of possessions."
In that frame, a knife, a set of iron belts, an unidentified iron object on the upper part of its body, as well as the end of a stick involving iron arms and iron nails about 2 inches long, were found.
Biermann stated that the iron elements found in the tomb of the man are interpreted as symbols of social status and prestige of the elite group. It is suspected that the man may have "served as an official in the castle or fortress on Bukit Franka that stood there during that period."

"Although there is a possibility that the woman's grave was robbed after the ceremony, Biermann affirmed that she, most likely, holds a stronger Christian belief than the man."

Both lived during the time when Christianity was slowly accepted. In this case, the decision not to provide burial goods can reflect a shift towards Christianity, while the provision of burial goods can reflect a more traditional attitude.
