"The tongue that is genetically blue is rarely found in the animal world. However, some animals have entirely blue tongues or spotted ones for self-defense, protection against sunlight, enhancing heat absorption, and reasons that are still unknown. Here are nine animals that have blue in their tongues!"
"Source : A-Z Animals"
"1. Blue-Tongued Skink (Tiliqua nigrolutea)"
The blue-tongued lizard (Tiliqua nigrolutea) primarily inhabits Tasmania and the southeastern region of Australia.
This omnivorous reptile mostly lives in grassy areas with plenty of plants for shelter and hiding. They use their striking blue tongue as part of their threat display. When threatened, the blue-tongued skink will confront the threat and stick out its bright blue tongue as a warning to its target.
2. Shar-Pei (Canis lupus familiaris)
"The only other dog breed that consistently has a blue or bluish-black tongue is the Chinese shar-pei. Like the chow chow, shar-pei puppies do not develop the blue color on their tongues until they are about 8-10 weeks old."
"This breed may have a tongue that is entirely blue or blue spots on a pink base. Shar-pei with a completely blue tongue also usually have a bluish-black muzzle and blue coloring around their eyes."
"3. Impala (Aepyceros spp.)"
"Medium-sized antelope, impala (Aepyceros spp.) are widely distributed in the savannah and plains throughout central-southern Africa."
The animal that resembles a deer is a nimble herbivore that gathers in large groups for better protection against various predators. This blue-tongued herbivore grazes on grass and browses on stems, bark, and leaves of shrubs and small trees.
"4. Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)"
"Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) and giraffes are two members of the Giraffidae family that still exist. Like their giraffe relatives, okapis have long, prehensile tongues that are used to grasp leaves, branches, and other vegetation."
"With striped legs, large ears, and an elongated neck, their blue tongue represents just one aspect of the okapi's distinctive features. Similar to giraffes, their bluish-black tongue likely protects against UV radiation in their homeland in the Democratic Republic of the Congo."
"5. Chow Chow (Canis lupus familiaris)"
"Chow chow, also known as Canis lupus familiaris, is a compact, sturdy, and strong dog with a bear-like face and distinctive fur on its head and shoulders."
"To add to its distinctive features, the chow chow also has a blue-black tongue. They are not born with this dark tongue. Instead, they are born with a pink tongue that changes to blue-black around 8-10 weeks of age."
"6. Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)"
The tallest land animal still alive in the world, the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) has a long tongue with a dark blue-purple color at the front.
"Because giraffes often browse the tree canopy, they are more exposed to the scorching sunlight. This blue color can provide extra protection against UV rays while they forage and grasp plants with their maneuverable tongue."
"7. Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)"
"The largest bear species that still exists and the largest land carnivore in the world, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) also has a rare blue tongue."
"Although its fur is as white as snow, the polar bear actually has black skin that helps with heat absorption and retention. This helps keep them warm in their cold roaming areas. Like its skin, the polar bear's tongue is also bluish-black to aid in heat absorption."
"8. Shingleback Lizard (Tiliqua rugosa)"
The shingleback lizard (Tiliqua rugosa) is an interesting reptile with a large head, short and blunt tail, armor-like scales, and a dark blue tongue. The shingleback lizard uses its blue tongue to deter predators or competitors.
"9. Eastern Blue-Tongued Skink (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides)"
The eastern blue-tongue lizard (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides) is commonly found throughout its range. It originates from the eastern, southeastern, and northern coastal regions of Australia, as well as the Tanibar Islands in Indonesia.
"With flexible habitat requirements and an unrestricted omnivorous diet, this species is well-suited for life in the wilderness and urban fringes. Members of this largest lizard family can reach lengths of 24 inches. Large snakes, the Australian monitor, large raptors, dingoes, as well as pet dogs and cats are the main predators of adult eastern blue-tongue lizards."
