Dream - The first photo of the Kaaba was captured in 1880, about 144 years ago, by a photographer named Mohammed Sadiq Bey. He was the first person to use a camera to photograph the Kaaba. Mohammed Sadiq Bey was a native of Egypt. When he visited Mecca in 1880, he took a photo of the Kaaba with his camera lens.
The result of this snapshot was then recorded in history as the first image of the Kaaba captured through the lens of a camera.
Mohammed Sadiq Bey is not only the first photographer to capture images of the Kaaba. He also wrote a book about his pilgrimage journey and visits to the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina. In total, there are four books of his work, all containing his travel experiences in the Holy City of Islam.
"Taken from a High Place"
He captured the Kaaba in a black and white photo. However, the Kaaba is clearly seen in the center of the image. Many buildings resembling hotels and residential houses from the past can be seen around it. Some multi-story buildings are also visible in the photo, but not as many and as tall as now. From the resulting photo, it is evident that Sabiq Bey took the photo of the Kaaba from a high place.
In another photo, Mohammed Sabiq Bey captured the Kaaba from a closer angle. The Kaaba is seen covered in black kiswah and surrounded by thousands of Muslims. It is estimated that the photo was taken during the Hajj season.
It turns out that before taking a picture of the Kaaba, Sabiq Bey had visited Mecca several times. At that time, he was part of the staff serving the pilgrims. His first visit to the Holy Land of Mecca occurred in 1861. During his first journey to Mecca, he used a wet collodion plate camera, which was a photographic device discovered at that time. Sabiq Bey's camera shots are still well-preserved to this day. In fact, his photo of the Kaaba has been exhibited at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
Of course, the photo of the Kaaba and the atmosphere of Mecca taken by Sabiq Bey provides a rare glimpse into the life of the holy city in the past, more than a century ago. His works successfully attracted the attention of many people, including the exhibition curator, Christine Barthe. According to her, this exhibition was attended by 44 different countries. However, for her, the two photos that caught the curator's attention were the Mecca photos taken in 1881 by Sabiq Bey.
"This is an important element because of its location, in fact, the photo was taken in the early days and also because the photo was taken by an Arab photographer, so this is truly a symbolic representation of the exhibition."
"revealed Christine Barthe."

"He referred to Sabiq Bey's photo snapshot as part of a historical moment. Although the photo of the Kaaba is now very familiar, it should be noted that in the past, the image of the Kaaba had never been recorded on film. 'This is a historical moment,' said Barthe."
It should be noted that photography techniques were commercially developed in 1839. Photography was first developed in Europe and then spread to Africa, America, Asia, and the Middle East. As time went on, the world of photography became more advanced. Nowadays, almost anyone can become a skilled photographer. Even mobile phones today are equipped with high-quality cameras. Of course, this is very different from 140 years ago when cameras were very rare objects. This is why the photo of the Kaaba taken by Sabiq Bey is an important historical image that needs to be preserved.
