Dream - Naomi, a Sriwijaya University (Unsri) alumnus in Palembang, South Sumatra (Sumsel), was upset to find a thesis on the Muhammadiyah University Palembang website that looked very similar to hers. Naomi was frustrated and shared her experience through a post on the X@wahkerensih account. Naomi stated that her thesis had been published since 2021.
"While a thesis by a student from the Faculty of Law at UM Palembang, which is suspected of plagiarizing his work, was published in March 2024. Naomi was not happy with the findings. 'My undergraduate thesis was completely plagiarized by a student from Muhammadiyah University Palembang. Ugh,' she wrote."
Naomi believes that the thesis of the UM Palembang student copied her work through the similarity of research backgrounds.
Seen in the shared image, the sentence structure and word choice are very similar in 2 paragraphs. In fact, this similarity is also found on other pages. Not only that, the plagiarizer doesn't even have their own creative direction.
Naomi said that there is no difference at all in footnotes and highlighting quotations. She considers this to be a cruel act. Truly despicable in the academic realm. "It's so cruel, sis, to completely plagiarize my thesis. I fought for it with hard work. My mom was sick with cancer at that time. I went back and forth from the hospital to my professor's house for guidance. If you don't have a heart, at least have manners and intelligence," she said.
Naomi also shared evidence of consulting about the thesis idea in 2020. She has gone through many struggles. She feels that she cannot just let go of this plagiarism case. Naomi then contacted and consulted with the Deputy Dean of Sriwijaya University. She decided to send a summons to UM Palembang University.
After his tweet went viral, the student who was suspected of plagiarizing Naomi's thesis then contacted her. The student denied committing plagiarism. The similarity that occurred was because the person in question also used the same theory as Naomi.
"Sorry, but it's not plagiarism, it's the theory for the final thesis assignment. It's possible that there are similarities, but not entirely because it's just a theory. And our discussions are different," she wrote. However, Naomi couldn't accept that defense. After checking the plagiarism, it amounted to 58%. That's a fairly high percentage for a scientific work."
Naomi found indications that the person used cunning methods to plagiarize her work. In order to pass Turnitin, many letters in the bibliography were replaced with specific symbols. Because of this, she became even more unable to accept this situation. Finally, Naomi sent a legal notice to UM Palembang. She also threatened that if the university did not respond within 30 days, Naomi would take legal action.
In response to the matter, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Muhammadiyah University of Palembang, Abdul Hamid Usman, stated that he would follow up on the report and form an investigation team as a form of resolution effort. He also stated that he is ready to impose strict sanctions on the student involved, especially if proven to have committed plagiarism.
"UM Palembang will soon follow up on this finding, secondly FH UM Palembang will immediately form an investigation team. Thirdly, if proven to have committed academic violations, FH UM Palembang will impose strict sanctions on the respective students," he said quoted from Instagram @umpalembang."
