MUI Fatwa Prohibits Muslims from Greeting Other Religions' Festivals

Dream - The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) issued a fatwa prohibiting the expression of greetings for other religious holidays. The fatwa was issued during the VIII Indonesian Ulama Commission Fatwa Assembly held in Bangka Belitung.

Although so, MUI stated that Muslims must still be tolerant towards followers of other religions. Muslims are obliged to give opportunities to followers of other religions who are currently celebrating religious rituals and major holidays. Niam explained that tolerance has two forms, namely akidah (faith) and muamalah (social interaction). Akidah tolerance involves granting freedom to followers of other religions to perform their religious festivals. Meanwhile, muamalah tolerance takes the form of cooperation in social life.
