"Dolphins are known for their extraordinary intelligence, but recently scientists have discovered another special ability in these marine mammals that can be referred to as the 'seventh sense'."
"Although bottlenose dolphins have been the subject of quite intensive research, recent studies in 2022 revealed that they have an amazing additional sense."
This dolphin has a series of sensitive pores on its nose called vibrissal crypts, which are highly responsive due to the abundance of nerves in that area.
The trial conducted by researchers at the University of Rostock and the Nuremberg Zoo in Germany, using two captured dolphins, Dolly and Donna, revealed that these sensitive pores enable them to detect weak electric fields in the water. The experiment involved dolphins being taught to touch their noses to a metal bar with electrodes in the water. Their reactions to electrical stimuli or the absence of stimuli were rewarded with food.
"From the results of the experiment, it is evident that dolphins can detect electric fields with a strength ranging from 2.4 to 5.5 microvolts per centimeter."
"Although not as sensitive as sharks and rays to electric fields, dolphins can utilize this ability to locate prey hidden on the seabed before hunting. Dehnhardt also argues that the dolphins' ability to sense electric fields can be beneficial in other situations, such as orienting themselves to the Earth's magnetic field."
"Sensitivity to weak electric fields helps dolphins locate fish hidden in the sediment during the last few centimeters before catching them,"
said the lead researcher, Guido Dehnhardt.
The translation of "Memiliki Jari 'Jempol'" to English while preserving the HTML tags is: "Having a 'Thumb' Finger".
The discovery about dolphins doesn't stop there, as recently scientists have found the first dolphin that has a 'thumb'.
The translated text is: "The images published of the dolphins that look somewhat unique display 'thumbs' that form hooks carved from their fins."
"This is the first time we have seen this astonishing fin morphology in 30 years of surveys in the open sea and also in studies while monitoring all the dolphins that have stranded on the shores of Greece over the past 30 years."
