Thonis-Heracleion, a city in Egypt that served as the main port to the Mediterranean Sea between the 8th century BC and the 4th century BC, sank into the sea in the 8th century AD.
Although only remembered in a few historical writings, the forgotten city ruins remained intact until the 21st century. In 2000, the European Institute of Maritime Archaeology, under the leadership of renowned archaeologist Franck Goddio, successfully discovered the treasure of the city at the depths of Abu Qir Bay.
Goddio and his team discovered 700 anchors and over 64 shipwrecks in Abu Qir Bay. The finding of weighing tools from Athens, which were likely used to measure important commodities, provides greater confidence in this. This weight has never been found at Egyptian archaeological sites before.
During more than four centuries until the establishment of Alexandria in 331 BC, Thonis ruled over the Kanopic region of the Nile River. Greek historian Diodorus of Sicily wrote about Thonis-Heracleion in his monumental work, Bibliothecahistorica, between 60 BC – 30 BC. Around the fifth century BC, Herodotus wrote that the Greek god and hero, Heracles, actually set foot in Egypt for the first time through this port city.
"Oleh karena itu, orang-orang Yunani memberi Thonis nama Heracleion dan membangun sebuah kuil megah yang didedikasikan untuknya." Therefore, the Greeks named Thonis as Heracleion and built a magnificent temple dedicated to him.
The following is the translation of the 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags: "This city is a bustling trading port and a center of religious worship. This city has a grand temple built to honor the heroic god Heracles, hence it is named Heracleion."
Found a sixteen-foot stone statue and a sarcophagus believed to contain animal mummies, reinforcing the idea that this city is an important religious site. The temple is also the location of the annual celebration of the Osiris Mystery, and three large statues at the entrance symbolize the pharaoh, his queen, and the god Hapy.
Apart from serving as a place of worship, many official business transactions are conducted here.
New supplies of Egyptian products to be brought home, ships from all ancient world lowered their anchors and unloaded their cargoes before sailing home. Taxes and fees were collected by officials, and a large amount of value was exchanged. From this position, the Nile River is also easily defended.
Started in the second century BC, this beautiful city began to sink into the depths of the sea. Some people theorize that floods and the excessive burden of the city also contributed to the sinking of the city.
Buildings and religious statues that are highly valued by the people of Egypt are worth millions of pounds. In addition, the land where these buildings are located constantly undergoes changes due to the frequent floods in the delta.
When civilization evolves and the first millennium AD comes and goes, humanity approaches the beginning of the Age of Reason when science and monotheism are pitted against the age of gods and mythical heroes. The sinking of the ancient Egyptian ports and temples seems to be a perfect metaphor for ending humanity's devotion to ancient gods and reverence for ancient mythology.
