Dream - One of the practices carried out in the month of Shawwal is to observe voluntary fasting for six days. Even if it is not possible to do it consecutively, this voluntary fasting can be done separately as long as it is still in the month of Shawwal. However, sometimes there are some Muslims who are unable to observe voluntary fasting in Shawwal for six days. This could be due to illness, making up for missed Ramadan fasting, or experiencing menstruation and postpartum bleeding for women. Meanwhile, voluntary fasting in Shawwal itself has special virtues. Therefore, it would be a pity to let it pass by.
So, is it allowed to fast for less than six days in Syawal? Here is the explanation in Islam as summarized by Dream through various sources.
The following are some proofs that come from hadiths explaining about voluntary fasting in the month of Shawwal.
Rasulullah saw bersabda:
"Whoever fasts for one month of Ramadan, and adds six days (of Shawwal) after Eid al-Fitr, the reward for their fasting will be like fasting for one whole year. And whoever performs one good deed, they will receive the reward of ten good deeds." (HR. Ibn Majah)
"As narrated by Muhammad bin Ibrahim, Usamah bin Zaid used to fast during the holy months. The Prophet Muhammad then said, 'Fast in the month of Shawwal.' He then explained the fasting until the end of his life." (HR. Sunan Ibn Majah)"
"The Prophet Muhammad saw prohibited fasting on two festive days, namely Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. (Meaning on the first day of Shawwal and the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah)." (HR. Muslim)
Then, for Muslims who are unable to fast, so they can only fast for less than six days of Shawwal, how is it?
"For Muslims who want to receive the blessings of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it is recommended to observe fasting for six days. However, if one wishes to fast for less than six days, they will still receive the rewards of the regular voluntary fasting, such as fasting on the white days. Additionally, if it is not possible to fast consecutively, Dream friends can observe fasting in Shawwal separately. Furthermore, Sheikh Nawawi Al-Bantani stated that making up the six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal is permissible."
So, for those who are unable to fast six days in the month of Syawal for certain reasons, such as illness, menstruation, postpartum bleeding, and so on, they can make up for it in another month. However, it is recommended to make up for it in the month of Dzulqa'dah. Here is the explanation of Syaikh Nawawi in the book Qutul Habibil Gharib, Tausyih ala Ibni Qasim: "One of the annual fasts is fasting six days in the month of Syawal, even if the person is unaware of it, denies it, or performs a vow fast, or other voluntary fasts, or make-up fasts for Ramadan or others."
"But, if he makes up for the missed Ramadan fasts in the month of Shawwal and intentionally delays fasting for six days until Shawwal has passed, then he will not receive the virtue of the voluntary fasting of Shawwal, so he should fast the voluntary fasting of Shawwal in the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah."
