Dream - The trend of checking khodam has recently gone viral on social media, especially on TikTok. There are even some people who have conducted live streaming to check the khodam, which has attracted a lot of viewers. As this phenomenon has become viral on social media, it has sparked curiosity among some people about the khodam. Questions arise about what khodam is and why someone would want to check it. In this growing trend, checking khodam is done by showing a figure that may appear strange. This appearance leads many people to believe that checking khodam is merely for entertainment purposes.
Regarding this phenomenon, what is the law of invoking spirits in Islam? Is this act permissible for its followers? Here is the explanation as summarized by Dream through various sources.
"What is Khodam?"
The word "khodam" itself comes from the Arabic language, 'Khodim', which means 'assistant'. There are also those who interpret the word "khodam" as a companion or support.
Khodam as a human companion can be obtained by humans because it is descended from ancestors or from oneself. The existence of this khodam enables humans to communicate with the unseen world or jinn. For Javanese people, khodam is usually referred to as prewangan. It is called khodam because someone can do various things that cannot be done by humans in general. The form of khodam varies. For companion or ancestral khodam, its form can be in the form of white macam, butterfly macam, dragon, qorin jinn, snake, white crocodile, tiger with stripes, and many more.
"Law of Checking Khodam in Islam"
Then, what if we look at it from an Islamic perspective? Is it permissible for a Muslim man or woman to perform a khodam check?
As stated by the Higher Education Research and Development Council of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah (Majelisdiktilitbang PP Muhammdiyah), there are four facts related to checking khodam on live TikTok as follows:
1. Contrary to Faith and Monotheism
Activities predicting khodam that are done live on TikTok are often associated with mystical, supernatural, and occult matters. These activities are contrary to the Islamic belief of monotheism (Tawhid), where Islam prohibits believing in powers other than Allah SWT.
2. Utilizing People's Ignorance
People who watch predictions check khodam through live TikTok appear out of curiosity or curiosity about the future. Finally, it is exploited by TikTok users, especially those who broadcast it to gain financial benefits. Moreover, the number of curious people is quite large.
3. Causing Anxiety and Fear
The predictions from the spirit check often show negative results. This can cause anxiety and fear for the people watching it.
4. Redirecting Focus from Worship
By watching live TikTok, it takes up a lot of time. Moreover, the live broadcast is not short because you have to wait for each person's turn to check their "khodam". Therefore, it can consume time and distract from worship.
Khodam in Islam
Believing in anything other than Allah SWT is strictly prohibited in the Islamic religion. Because it is related to a person's faith.
Even, through the word of Allah SWT it has been explained as follows: "And indeed if you ask them, 'Who has created the heavens and the earth?' Surely they will answer, 'Allah.' Say, 'Then tell me about what you invoke besides Allah, if Allah intended harm for me, can your idols remove His harm, or if Allah intended mercy for me, can they withhold His mercy?' Say, 'Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers.'" (QS. Az-Zumar: 38)
The scholars also agree that believing in the power of anything other than Allah SWT, including making, possessing amulets or spirits for the purpose of attracting customers, beauty, immunity, and the like, is considered an act of shirk or associating partners with Allah SWT. Such act of shirk can bring about a great sin. As explained in Surah An-Nisa verse 48:
"Indeed, Allah will not forgive the sin of shirk (associating partners with Him), but He forgives all other sins for whom He wills. Whoever associates partners with Allah has indeed committed a great sin." (Quran, An-Nisa' 48)
