Dream - Around 50 passengers of Air New Zealand flights experienced an unpleasant surprise on Valentine's Day, Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
They were asked to share a room as a substitute at the Auckland airport hotel after the NZ8270 flight to Kerikeri was canceled on Valentine's Day afternoon due to mechanical issues. After several delays and limited availability of replacement flights, the airline also failed to find a pilot for the replacement flight.
Because there was no transportation to Northland the next day, the passengers were booked at the airport hotel for overnight stays. However, during check-in, passengers were asked to share rooms with other passengers. It was a surprising Valentine's Day for the passengers, wasn't it? "We were asked to share accommodation because there was no other option," said Jontel Kiwikiwi, a passenger from Paihia, New Zealand.
Fellow passenger, Vanessa Bennett, from Bay of Islands, refused for reasons of safety and privacy. However, on the other hand, Vanessa believes that other passengers, tired from the journey and stressed due to the situation, would accept the offered proposal. Through Nzherald.co.nz, Bennett stated that the hotel manager contacted the airline and said that they could not allow strangers to share a room together.
Finally, at 11 o'clock at night, Bennett and Kiwikiwi, along with two other passengers, were given separate rooms to rest. In addition, the passengers were offered food vouchers worth $90 or equivalent to Rp918 thousand and a replacement flight to Kerikeri at four o'clock in the afternoon, a journey that departed 24 hours after the original flight. "When we paid $300 for a flight, if you cannot respect that flight, return our money. I told them that they needed to refund it and I would arrange my own room, but they said there would be no refund," said Bennett.
Bennett said that he is facing business losses and is scheduled to host an event for clients in Northland on Thursday, one day after the initial flight schedule. Based on the rights and consumer conventions of New Zealand, airlines are required to provide alternative transportation, as well as provisions for food and accommodation in the event of a cancellation.
According to the New Zealand Civil Aviation Act, passengers are also entitled to request a full refund and reasonable additional costs up to 10 times the value of their ticket. Passengers in the northern region say they are used to disruptions, but having to share accommodation with someone else is something new. "Imagine if Shane Jones was on a flight and he was asked to share a room with someone. He flies back every week," said Bennett.
Passengers who have been affected by disruptions on previous routes say it is difficult to get reimbursed and even request adequate replacement transportation. Typically, travelers will receive information about flight constraints some time before the scheduled time via SMS. Kiwikiwi, who travels at least once a week for work, said she is used to being disturbed and receiving the same message. "My reaction is 'Oh God, not again!'" she said.
The spokesperson for Air New Zealand, Iain Walker, said that sharing a room for those who are not traveling together is not the airline's policy. Customers who are affected by cancellations will be given travel vouchers according to the airline's policy.
"The policy is not to ask customers who are not traveling together to share a room, and if this seems to be a miscommunication, we will encourage affected customers to contact us so that we can address this issue directly," he explained.
Walker said that if possible, passengers are given the option to rebook on the next available service or choose a refund of the fare or airline credit. Due to limited flight availability to Kerikeri, passengers are also offered alternative ground transportation on Thursday afternoon.
"We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this disruption and acknowledge that disrupted travel plans can be frustrating for customers," Walker concluded. Source: Nzherald.co.nz
