When discussing animals that can fly, the first thing that comes to mind is birds. Birds are known for their ability to fly. However, did you know that the following animals also have the ability to fly just like birds? Although they do not have wings like birds, it turns out that these animals have the ability to fly. In fact, some of them live in the air! Summarized from various sources on Sunday (01/07/2024), the following animals are believed to be able to fly in the air just like birds.
Snake flying, from the genus Chrysopelea, live in West India and Indonesian islands, with a length of up to 4 feet. Although gliding like other animals, they are more agile than flying squirrels and colugos.
Usually at the top of a tree, flying snakes jump from branch to avoid predators or search for prey. While flying, they utilize their concave bodies to capture air and stay in the air longer, using undulating body movements to rotate.
Manta rays, also known as Mobula rays or devil rays, are part of the Mobula genus and have a close relationship with manta rays.
Flying fish have a wingspan of up to 17 feet and can leap up to 6 feet in the air. Although they cannot fly continuously, they are able to cover long distances and return to the water with a powerful splash.
Colugos, often referred to as flying lemurs, are actually not related to lemurs. Colugo has a webbing that connects its limbs and tail, similar to bats.
That makes it possible to glide more than 230 feet without losing measurable altitude. These nocturnal tree creatures mostly eat vegetarian food, a unique characteristic among the aforementioned animals.
The flying frog Wallace (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus), the largest and most famous among other flying frogs, originates from the tropical forests of Malaysia and Kalimantan.
They spend most of their time in trees, only coming down to lay eggs or mate. This frog uses a web between its two legs to glide up to 50 feet after jumping from a branch, both when threatened or when hunting insects.
English translation: Japanese flying squid has unique wing-like fins on the upper part of their body. Although not used for propulsion, these fins help them glide. They are found in the North Pacific Ocean near Japan, Russia, China, and Alaska.
Flying squirrels are part of the Pteromyini tribe, which includes more than 50 species. They cannot fly continuously like birds or bats, but are able to glide between trees over significant distances.
Adaptation of loose skin and muscles between its two legs allows some species to glide up to 1,500 feet. Active at night, they leap from treetops and cliffs to initiate their flight, controlling direction and speed by changing their body position and using small cartilage bones in their wrists.
Foxes fly, or fruit bats of the old world, are a group of bats that live on tropical islands and mainland Asia, different from other bats because they navigate with vision and eat fruit.
The smallest species, such as the long-tongued nectar bat, is only about 2-3 inches long with a wingspan of 10 inches. On the other hand, the largest species, like the golden-crowned flying fox, has a wingspan of up to six feet and is often hunted by humans.
This fish has special pectoral fins that allow it to leap out of the water and glide at speeds of up to 37 mph. With strength, the fish flies towards the surface, then uses its fins to glide over 600 feet.
Bat, the only flying mammal in the order Chiroptera, comes in various sizes from small bee bats weighing 0.07 ounces to golden-crowned flying foxes that can reach 3 pounds. They feed on insects, fruits, nectar, and animal blood.
