In the midst of the beautiful mountain scenery that dominates Japan, there is one mountain that attracts attention because of its unusual height, which is only 6.1 meters. This phenomenon may sound unbelievable to many people, as they are accustomed to the image of tall mountains. However, behind the height of this mountain lies an interesting story about the geography and unique nature of Japan. Despite being only 6.1 meters tall, this mountain has interesting characteristics and is important in the context of history and the lives of the local community around it.
Located in the middle of fertile rice fields along Prefecture Road 10 Tokushima, Mount Benten is the shortest mountain in Japan and one of the shortest mountains in the world. On average, it only takes one minute for people to reach the summit of this mountain, but more than 10,000 people travel here every year for special purposes.
For some people, climbing a mountain as high as 6.1 meters is something new. However, others come to admire the wax trees, camellia flowers, and other flowers that make the rocks their home. Some others are also taking a short trip to reach the Itsukushima Temple, which was built to honor Benzaiten, the goddess of wisdom.
Mount Benten was officially opened to tourists on June 1st, during the "First New Year's Climb" event organized by the local non-profit organization. Visitors who reach the 6.1-meter summit on that day will be given a Scaling Certificate.
Throughout the year, the shortest mountain in Japan has hosted various events, ranging from cherry blossom festivals to wedding ceremonies. It is not surprising that Mount Benten is not only the shortest mountain but also the safest mountain in Japan, and there have been no reports of accidents or missing persons recorded here.
