Local grape farmer, Andreas Pernerstorfer, discovered mammoth bones in his wine cellar in Gobelsburg, Krems, near Vienna. He reported the finding to the Federal Monuments Office of Austria, who referred him to the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Archaeology. The discovery is the most significant in the country in over 100 years. Archaeologists found layers of mammoth bones in the wine cellar, along with stone artifacts and charcoal, which helped determine the age of the mammoth bones.
"Previously, around 150 years ago, a similar discovery was reported in Gobelsburg. This discovery became the first discovery after a century long."
The researchers found layers of bones, stone artifacts, decorative fossils, and charcoal in the adjacent underground space. The new discovery in Gobelsburg could explain how prehistoric humans hunted mammoths.

Archeologists believe that the location where mammoth bones were found in the Pernerstorfer basement could be the place of the animal's death.
It is possible that the mammoth in that place died because people were chasing the mammoth and setting traps. Researchers are currently examining the remains of the mammoth to gain new insights before its skeleton is moved and restored at the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
Its resemblance to ancient Egyptian sites has captivated the imagination of millions of people worldwide.
