In the journey to explore the beauty of the natural world, there are amazing natural wonders that also hold unsettling mysteries. One of the famous natural phenomena is the deadliest cave in the world, a place that is not only visually stunning but also emits a terrifying threat. The uniqueness of this cave lies in its extreme nature, where fire can extinguish in an instant due to the presence of something unexpected. To discuss further, please read the following article!
A cave located on the edge of Mount Poas, la Cueva de la Muerte, is only 2 meters deep and 3 meters long. Although this small cave may not appear dangerous to the naked eye, it is filled with carbon dioxide, a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is also highly toxic. To demonstrate the deadly nature of the Death Cave, researchers placed a lit torch inside the cave, which immediately extinguished due to the lack of oxygen and high concentration of carbon dioxide.
There is no one who really knows exactly where carbon dioxide in the Cave of Death comes from. However, a number of researchers have concluded that the organic nature of the gas indicates that it is the result of mineral deposits that undergo high temperature and pressure in the earth's magma, where oxygen is absent. The location of the cave, which is around an active volcano, may also be related to the gas. One thing is certain, scientists have found that la Cueva de la Muerte produces about 30kg of carbon dioxide per hour.
The deadly nature of this small cave was discovered accidentally during the construction phase of the Recreo Verde complex. A worker near the entrance began to feel nauseous, prompting a thorough investigation of the surrounding environment. The Death Cave has several warning signs to deter people from entering. Additionally, there is solid carbon dioxide (purity around 80-90 percent) at the cave floor, making it even more deadly for small animals, who experience shortness of breath shortly after entering the cave.
