"Ramadan in Indonesia is a moment that is not only about performing religious rituals, but also to celebrate the richness of diverse cultures and traditions."
Speaking of traditions, out of the many islands in Indonesia, Java is one that is rich in history and cultural traditions. In fact, in Java itself, there are many different traditions and rituals, but they all have one goal, which is to respect the Creator.
"Unique Traditions in Java"
"From the many traditions practiced by the community in Java Island, there are several traditions that are only done when Ramadan arrives or once a year."
1. Nyadran
"In welcoming the month of Ramadan, Nyadran becomes one of the unique traditions carried out by the people of Central Java."
Meaning of Nyadran
Nyadran comes from the Sanskrit language, sraddha which means belief. This tradition is interpreted as a form of gratitude for the blessings given by God before entering the blessed fasting month.
Performed in Various Ways
"Nyadran is carried out in various ways, people gather to engage in activities such as visiting the graves of their ancestors, cleaning the graves, and holding prayers together. In addition, some also organize traditional art performances, such as shadow puppetry or ludruk, to entertain the visitors."
During Nyadran, a village will be filled with people who gather together with togetherness. Many people look forward to that day to visit and strengthen brotherhood. Therefore, Nyadran is not only a tradition, but also a social adhesive of the cultural process in Central Java.
2. Padusan
Quoted from Indonesia.go.id, the tradition of Padusan has been conducted by the community before the entry of Islam into Java.
"From the Majapahit Era"
"In the Majapahit Kingdom era, knights, poets, brahmins, and artisans often performed padusan to purify themselves. Until now, Padusan remains a popular tradition in the areas around Klaten, Boyolali, Salatiga, and even Yogyakarta."
In general, this tradition involves soaking or bathing in water sources that are considered to have high spiritual or religious value for the local community. The Padusan tradition is not just a ritual, but also strengthens the spiritual and cultural bonds of the Javanese community and showcases the richness of the traditional heritage that has been preserved until now.
3. Megengan
"Megengan is a tradition carried out one day before the Ramadan fasting in various regions in East Java."
The tradition that originally emerged from the surrounding area of Masjid Ampel invites people to gather at the mosque or village courtyard and bring food or drinks that have been prepared beforehand, such as ketupat, lontong, and traditional cakes, as well as drinking water and coffee. "Megengan" is closely related to the tradition of eating apem, a thick and almost tasteless pancake-like food. By eating apem, it is believed to be a sign of asking for forgiveness from others, friends, and relatives.
4. Kuramasan
The following 'Bahasa' text translated to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Tradisi kuramasan is a mass bathing activity that is still carried out in Miduana Village, Cianjur, West Java."
In Sundanese language, "kuramas" means shampooing or washing hair. Before taking a kuramas bath, the local leader recites intentions and prayers, then goes down to the Cipandak River without undressing. From the tradition of kuramas bath, the local community learns the importance of cleansing oneself physically and spiritually, starting something with good intentions and perfect preparations, always maintaining unity, caring for others, and prayers led by the local leader.
5. Dandangan
To mark the beginning of Ramadan, the community in Kudus, Central Java has a unique tradition called "dandangan".
This tradition is carried out by beating the bedug drum at the Menara Kudus Mosque. The word "dandangan" itself comes from the sound of the bedug drum that goes "dang". In the courtyard of the Menara Kudus Mosque, the bedug drum is sounded twice to announce the beginning of Ramadan. The first beat of the bedug drum signifies gathering people. Then, the second beat is intended to establish and open the beginning of Ramadan after the Isya prayer.
"Procession is conducted"
The following 'Bahasa' text translated to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "This dandangan tradition also features a dandangan procession that represents the culture in the city of Kudus. The procession is carried out by walking around the city square for a distance of one kilometer."
