Dream - Becoming the third pillar of Islam, zakat is not unfamiliar to Muslims. Among the various types of zakat in Islam, one that is obligatory is zakat fitrah. Zakat fitrah is performed during the month of Ramadan until the approach of Eid al-Fitr prayer. Despite frequently fulfilling zakat fitrah, it is possible that some of us still lack understanding of the purpose and benefits of zakat fitrah.
The purpose and benefits of zakat fitrah in Islamic teachings are to purify the wealth and soul of a Muslim from any deficiencies and evils that may be hidden within oneself. As humans, we are never free from wrongdoing. No matter how much we try to prevent and avoid it, mistakes always haunt us. This includes obtaining sustenance. This is why zakat fitrah has the purpose and benefit of purifying wealth and soul from all that is forbidden and not good. Additionally, zakat fitrah also aims to provide an opportunity for those who are less fortunate to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in a proper and adequate manner.
The evidence about zakat fitrah is clearly stated in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 43: "And establish prayer, give zakat, and bow with those who bow [in worship]." (QS. Al-Baqarah ayat 43)
"(HR. Bukhari and Muslim)"
The following are the objectives and benefits of zakat fitrah that need to be understood:
The first purpose and benefit of zakat fitrah is to purify wealth and soul. Throughout their lives, human souls are often filled with impurities. Therefore, Allah SWT has commanded them to pay zakat fitrah as a way to purify their souls. Zakat fitrah helps cleanse the soul of a Muslim from minor sins that may have occurred during Ramadan and before, by giving a portion of their wealth to those in need. In doing so, the wealth they acquire will also be free from doubtful matters.
The purpose and benefits of Zakat fitrah next is to provide direct assistance to those who are less fortunate, ensuring that they have enough to celebrate Idul Fitri properly. This benefit is closely related to the human obligation to help each other. So, besides earning rewards, fulfilling Zakat fitrah is also economically beneficial.
By giving zakat fitrah, Muslims strengthen social bonds and solidarity among one another, as they assist those in need within their community.
4. Increasing Social AwarenessThrough the obligation to give zakat fitrah, Muslims are commanded to pay attention to the conditions of those less fortunate around them, increasing social awareness and empathy.5. Getting Closer to AllahLike zakat in general, zakat fitrah is also a form of worship that brings a Muslim closer to Allah SWT, as it is a manifestation of obedience to His command.
One of the goals and benefits of zakat fitrah that must be fulfilled by Muslims is as a complement to the act of fasting throughout the month of Ramadan. Zakat fitrah is a good matter that can cover all the shortcomings of our worship in the month of Ramadan.
One of the goals and benefits of zakat fitrah is to express gratitude for the blessings of Allah SWT. Fulfilling the obligation of zakat fitrah is also a way for Muslims to show gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah SWT. Therefore, the blessings we receive from Allah SWT will become more abundant, as we are aware that everything we have is a gift from Him. When we express gratitude, Allah will bestow more blessings upon us.
