Dream - Global supermarket giant Carrefour has decided to end its purchase of frog legs from Indonesia, which has been the largest supplier to the European market. Previously, Carrefour had suspended its purchase of frog legs from Indonesia following an investigation by PETA.
Research by PETA reveals that the process of capturing and shipping frogs from Indonesia is conducted in an inhumane manner. The act of hacking the frogs is done in order to obtain their thighs, which are then sold to various supermarkets in France, including Carrefour.
The decision of Carrefour was made after more than 90 thousand people who are part of the PETA entity worldwide expressed their support for frogs in writing to Carrefour Group.
Investigation by PETA reveals workers catching frogs in their natural habitat and stuffing them into tied sacks, where they try to escape but slowly suffocate to death. The workers also cut off the heads and legs of the frogs on the floor or cutting board, causing them to be covered in blood, and many of these frogs are still alive and conscious.
Indonesia is one of the largest exporters of frog legs in the world, and the largest to France. Every year, hundreds of millions of frog legs are shipped from Indonesia to distributors in the European Union.
Recorded nearly 322 tons were imported between March and May 2023 and ended up in French restaurants and supermarkets.
A worker who was sorting captured frogs slammed a live frog onto the floor and admitted that he did not want to waste time separating the live frogs from the dead ones. PETA investigators visited seven operational frog meat facilities in Indonesia and found live frogs stuffed into sacks, sometimes for up to two days.

Researchers also recorded the mouths of frogs that continued to open and close after being decapitated, and headless bodies still leaping minutes later. The captured frog species included paddy frogs and middle stone frogs experienced a decline in population. Although it is illegal to capture stone frogs, PETA revealed that Indonesian suppliers deliberately falsified labels and continued to export the species.
According to Eurostat, the EU imported around 35,000 tons of frog legs between 2010 and 2022, equivalent to approximately 703 million to 1.75 billion individual frogs. PETA emphasizes that when imported from other countries, including within France, frogs used in the meat industry are typically immobilized in cold rooms or water basins at temperatures between 0 and 4°C before being dismembered while still fully conscious.
