Dream - The Tokyo city government in Japan is trying various ways to increase its population. The latest step is to encourage young people in Tokyo to get married. The latest effort is the creation of a matchmaking application to promote marriage and address the drastically declining birth rate. Not sparing any expense, a budget of US$1.28 million or approximately Rp20 billion was allocated to develop this application.
Quoting The Asahi Shimbun, the Tokyo city government has allocated 200 million yen in 2023 and 300 million yen in the fiscal year 2024 for dating applications and other marriage promotion projects. This application will be managed by private parties.
The registration process for this application will be conducted comprehensively. In addition to being asked to upload identity photos, users must also provide income certificates and show that they are still single through family cards or other official documents.
Users will also be asked to enter 15 personal information, including height, educational background, and occupation. All of this personal data will be disclosed to potential partners.
"Fans are also required to undergo an interview process with the application operator during registration. In addition, users are asked to sign a letter of declaration stating that they are using this application to find a marriage partner, not just for casual relationships. Tokyo officials said that these requirements are necessary to prevent potential credibility issues from arising."
A 2021 survey by Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting Co. found that 60 percent of dating app users reported instances of marriage status misuse, fake profiles, and other issues related to potential partners. Nevertheless, dating apps continue to grow in popularity.
According to a survey conducted by Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co. last fall, dating apps and workplace meetings are the most common ways for couples to meet. This app accounts for 25 percent of couples who get married within a year. The unmarried status in Tokyo for 50-year-olds is the highest in Japan, with 32 percent for men and 24 percent for women.
However, according to a 2021 survey by the local government, 67.4 percent of Tokyo residents who want to get married are not actively seeking a partner. Around 90 thousand babies were born in Tokyo in 2022, which is also a decrease of 15.2 percent from the previous decade.
