"Dream - The short video sharing platform, TikTok, is set to face a major issue. One of the world's largest music companies, Universal Music Group (UMG), has announced that it will withdraw its entire music catalog from the platform. UMG's contract with TikTok is known to have expired since Wednesday, January 31, 2024. With UMG's decision to withdraw its catalog, all music distributed and managed by its record music division and Universal Music Publishing Group can no longer be freely used by TikTok or its users."

The decision became bad news as many famous artists are under the UMG umbrella, such as Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Karol G, Post Malone, and others from around the world.
Quoting Billboard, in an open letter UMG accuses TikTok of attempting to build a music-based business without paying fair value for the music.

In the letter released on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, and addressed to artists and songwriters, UMG stated that they are very concerned about the prices offered by TikTok to pay for their catalog. Other points of contention include the amount of content on TikTok that violates the works of artists and songwriters, but TikTok does not provide a solution.
"In relation to the issue of artist and songwriter compensation, TikTok proposes to pay our artists and songwriters at a lower price than what is paid by other major social platforms."

In the letter, UMG also claimed that when they proposed for TikTok to take the same steps as other partner platforms to try to address the issue, the platform company did not respond.
