"Dream - A professor named Charles A. O'Reilly from Stanford University discovered that people with narcissistic traits tend to have a more successful career and even earn higher salaries."
This research was written by O'Reilly together with UC Berkeley doctoral student Bernadette Doerr, Santa Clara University professor David F. Caldwell, and UC Berkeley professor Jennifer A. Chatman. Citing Merdeka.com, this study surveyed employees at 32 major publicly traded technology companies to identify narcissistic CEOs among them. The research conducted in 2014 was published in The Leadership Quarterly.
"The employees involved in this research filled out personality assessments about their CEO, which included evaluations of the level of narcissism of the leaders such as "selfish," "arrogant," and "conceited.""
This research states that narcissistic CEOs are paid more than their non-narcissistic or merely confident peers. The researchers chose to focus on the technology industry because this industry is rapidly changing and high-risk. Partly because this industry values individuals who are confident in their own vision and who are willing to take risks.
"In places like Silicon Valley, where grandeur is valued, we almost select these people,"
word O'Reilly.
"Narcissistic CEOs secure salary contracts at least in part by charming board members. The study found that companies with highly narcissistic leaders do not always perform better than those led by less narcissistic executives. Narcissistic CEOs/founders receive greater compensation than their narcissistic peers who did not found their companies."
The research also found that the longer a narcissistic company leader remains in power, the further their salary progresses compared to their team, as they often exchange ideas with the board of directors, wanting more money for themselves and less for their team.
"O'Reilly writes that narcissism is a personality type characterized by very dominant indications, having high self-confidence, a sense of entitlement, grandiosity, and low empathy. Narcissists naturally emerge as leaders because they embody prototypical leadership qualities such as energy, self-assurance, and charisma. 'They do not care much about what others think, and depending on the narcissistic traits, they can be impulsive and manipulative,' says O'Reilly."
