Dream - This is the story of Dr. Sudanto, who is nicknamed "Doctor Two Thousand". The nickname is not without reason, this doctor, a graduate of Gadjah Mada University (UGM), has been serving in Papua with a consultation fee of only Rp2,000.
Since graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in 1976, Sudanto has devoted himself in Abepura, Jayapura. Sudanto does not want to impose a burden on the Abepura community by charging fees. If his patients do not have money, he will voluntarily provide free treatment or exchange it with garden spices.
"stated by the Rector of UGM, Sudjarwadi in an article written on ugm.ac.id in 2009."
First time opening a practice, this doctor born in Karang Anyar, Kebumen, on December 5, 1941, only received a payment of Rp500 for his services.
Then he set a very cheap price of Rp2,000 for adults and Rp1,000 for children and students. The people of Papua then gave a special nickname to Sudanto, "Doctor 2000 rupiah". In fact, due to his long service and being loved by the community, many patients were immediately cured just by seeing him. "Some people come just to get healed," Sudanto said to Liputan6.com in 2013.
"For medications, Sudanto only prescribes cheap drugs. He even gives them for free if there are any medications at his house. 'It's a pity, those who are in need usually suffer from illness,' said Sudanto."
Sudanto is the winner of the category of Pioneer of Empowerment for Underdeveloped, Frontline, Outermost (3T) Alumni Awards 2009. After graduating in 1976, Sudanto registered to participate in the Doctor Inpres (Presidential Instruction) program at the Ministry of Health. Sudanto was then placed in the Asmat region, Irian Jaya (now Papua). From the beginning of his assignment until 1982, Sudanto served in 4 remote districts in the Asmat region.
Seeing the economic limitations of the Asmat community, Sudanto decided to dedicate himself to healthcare services in Asmat.
After 6 years of serving as an Inpres doctor, Sudanto continued his career at the Abepura Mental Health Hospital (RSJ) until his retirement in 2003. In addition to being a doctor, Sudanto continued to dedicate himself by serving as an educator and teaching at the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) at Cenderawasih University (Uncen) in Jayapura. This includes teaching in the Jasmi Education and Health (Penjaskes) study program at FKIP Uncen, as well as several private universities in Jayapura.
"Even though he has retired, Sudanto admits that he will not stop serving for the sake of the local residents' health. His experience of living with limited means when he was young makes him not want to see people struggle to get medical treatment just because they don't have the funds. 'I will always serve. There are many less fortunate people here,' he said."
Sudanto opens his practice at home from Monday to Saturday starting at 08.00 WIT until 12.00 WIT, and sometimes even longer. In just one day, he can treat 100 to 200 patients.
Luhut emphasizes that this step is taken to ensure that the community is not disadvantaged in the process of developing the strategic project IKN.
