"Dream - A bank in China has been praised for its willingness to repair sheets of paper money that had been torn into more than 100,000 pieces by a woman suffering from depression. The money was worth 32,000 yuan or around Rp72 million. The bank, named Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), located in Kunming, Yunnan, took more than 20 days, with four employees to complete the task."
According to the South China Morning Post, the tens of millions of dollars were brought by a woman with the surname Zhang. She recounted that five years earlier, the money had been cut into pieces by her brother-in-law, who was then struggling with mental health issues and recently passed away.
"Zhang's brother is now a widower with four children. They live in a mountain village in Sichuan province. This family's condition is in great need of money for survival. Before being handled by ICBC Bank, they took the broken currency to several local banks, but all refused. Although the regulations in China allow for the exchange of damaged banknotes."
The bank visited by Mr. Zhang refused on the grounds that it would be too troublesome for them to consolidate the broken pieces of money.
“Life for my brother is not easy, and if that money could be exchanged, it would greatly help them, so I decided to try my luck,”
The translation of "kata Zhang." to English is "Zhang said."
Zhang was also surprised when the ICBC bank branch immediately agreed to help him by fixing the money. "This is the first time we have seen so many banknotes. There are more than 100,000 pieces, some even smaller than a fingernail. There are three types of currency with different patterns," said one of the workers.
The bank employee said they used a magnifying glass to identify the fragments during the task, which took 22 intensive working days. Finally, they managed to reconnect banknotes with a combined value of 32,000 yuan.
Zhang then sent a specially made silk banner to the bank to thank the staff. “Consider the difficulties of others, solve problems, and warm the heart,” reads the Mandarin characters on the banner.
"Bank ICBC also received praise from netizens on social media.
“Thumbs up for the bank. They are very sympathetic towards ordinary people,”said someone on Douyin.
“How hard the bank employees work. They might get depressed after handling so much damaged paper money,”said another."
