"Dream - Designer Didiet Maulana and his team have just showcased their beautiful works at the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) Indonesia Now The Shows Spring Summer 23/24. In the show held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, local time, IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana presented a piece titled 'Wiron'."
In his written statement received on Friday, September 15, Wiron is taken from the word "wiru" in Javanese language which means small elongated folds, arranged on fabric. This collection is ready-to-wear clothing for women, radiating the distinctive elegance of Indonesia, but with an energetic touch.
"We embed this inspiration through elegant and modern silhouettes in works such as long vests, wrap dresses, wrap skirts, long coats, and lightweight trench coats, as well as showcasing a collection of swimsuits with touches of Indonesian Ikat woven motifs," said Didiet.
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Detail lipit jadi daya tarik koleksinya ini dan diaplikasikan desain rok panjang dan gaun-gaun. Didiet terinspirasi dari penggunaan teknik wiron pada kain batik Jawa sebagai impresi keanggunan wanita Indonesia dengan kehalusan tutur geraknya." "The folding detail becomes the attraction of this collection and is applied to the design of long skirts and dresses. Didiet is inspired by the use of wiron technique on Javanese batik fabric as an impression of the elegance of Indonesian women with the finesse of their movements."
The collection also presents bralette that depicts the use of kemben in traditional Indonesian women's clothing and oversized outerwear with volume inspired by the silhouette of baju bodo from Sulawesi. The contrast effect is applied through the combination of materials, such as organza and tulle with woven ikat fabric that provides a dynamic element, as well as bringing together a modern impression with traditional Ikat motifs.
After the show was held, Didiet admitted that many praised his work, some even wanted to buy his collection right away. "But this is still a sampling for the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, so we haven't sold it yet," he said.
Although, he stated that tempting offers from several stores in New York came in accordance with the event. They want Didiet's label to fill their shelves with woven works, although he did not specify the parties involved. "I received a multibrand store offer to put products there. Hopefully, in the near future," he said. According to Didiet, the offer is also proof that Indonesian textiles actually have a huge market potential abroad. He even saw several department stores in New York displaying various high-end fashion items with woven motifs.
"So, in my opinion, this is our opportunity to expand myself to the international world," he said while hoping to soon have his own store abroad with international-scale customers."
Didiet hopes to be able to showcase his work again in other world fashion weeks. Paris Fashion Week and London Fashion Week are his dreams. "Just pray," he said. Previously, New York Fashion Week was chosen as the stage to showcase a series of works by Indonesian designers. The collection of seven designers and Indonesian fashion brands were showcased at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) The Shows - Spring Summer 2023/2024. This fashion show presented a collection with the richness of Indonesian culture on the stage of NYFW The Shows, which is part of the official lineup of New York Fashion Week. The fashion show through the "Indonesia Now" group show took place at Spring Studios, New York, United States, on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 11:00 New York time.
The following designers and fashion and accessory brands from Indonesia will be appearing in NYFW The Shows, namely Ghea Panggabean, IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana, Ivan Gunawan, LAVANI by AMERO X LIVETTE, AYUMI, Kimberly Tandra X Mandy's Shoes, and Merdi Sihombing.
