Dream - Julia Barresi, a 19-year-old woman from Australia, fell into a coma after being struck by a disease called "Bali belly". This woman felt unwell for several days while vacationing with her friends on the island of Bali. She was taken to the hospital when she began experiencing seizures and was flown back to Australia, where she is currently being treated at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Her mother, Jen Barresi, said that Julia will undergo an MRI on Monday. "She has never had a seizure before. She did have health issues when she was younger, but now she is completely healthy," Ms Barresi told Daily Mail Australia.
Ms. Barresi believes that the seizures are caused by low sodium levels triggered by the disease. "She is not a heavy drinker. I don't even think she would drink much because she is sick, so she might not touch it," she said.
What is Bali Belly?
Bali Belly is a term for traveler's diarrhea when in Bali. Quoted from Alodokter, the causes are almost the same as diarrhea in general, which is due to consuming food or drinks contaminated with bacteria such as E. coli or Salmonella, viruses such as Norovirus or Rotavirus, or parasites such as Giardia and Cyclospora.
Causes of Bali Belly
Bacteria or virus that causes Bali belly enters through raw food, seafood, drinking water, or street snacks that are often enjoyed by tourists. This case often occurs in foreign tourists visiting Bali due to different eating habits, food processing standards, and immune systems.
"Aspect of Cleanliness"
The digestive system's response to foreign microorganisms entering the body is suspected to be the cause of Bali belly. That's why tourists from countries with high cleanliness levels are at a higher risk of experiencing Bali belly when visiting countries with low cleanliness levels, such as countries in the African continent.
Symptoms of Bali Belly
The following is a list of symptoms of Bali belly that appear within 6-24 hours after being infected with bacteria or viruses from contaminated food and drinks:
Diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Bloating
Nausea and vomiting
Fever
Malaise
Decreased appetite
"How to Overcome Bali Belly"
When experiencing Bali belly, try not to panic. The symptoms of this digestive disorder usually improve on their own within 2-3 days. If not accompanied by severe dehydration and the infection is successfully fought off by the immune system, the condition of Bali belly can subside after a few days.
Therefore, if you experience diarrhea, try to drink plenty of fluids or consume oral rehydration solutions to prevent the body from becoming dehydrated or lacking fluids. In addition, consume good food to treat diarrhea. To prevent diarrhea from getting worse, eat in small portions but frequently. However, if the symptoms do not improve after 7 days, consult a doctor immediately as it could be Bali belly caused by a parasitic infection. Source: News.com.au/ Alodokter.
