Shocking Facts of the Arrest of Iman Mahlil Lubis, Suspect of Attaching Fake QRIS in Mosque that Earned Rp13 Million in a Week

Dream - The police finally arrested Mohammad Iman Mahlil Lubis, the suspect of fake QRIS fraud in a Jakarta mosque. The investigation results showed that Iman managed to collect tens of millions of rupiah from his criminal activities.

Director of Special Criminal Investigation of Jakarta Metro Police, Commissioner Pol Auliansyah Lubis, explained that Iman's actions of attaching fake QRIS were uncovered due to the suspicion of one of the administrators of Nurul Iman Mosque, Blok M Jaksel.

"One of the caretakers asked another mosque administrator who attached the QRIS on the mosque wall. Then the mosque administrator or DKM said they didn't know who attached it," said Auliansyah during a press conference at Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.

Auliansyah explained that the administrators found QRIS or QR Codes attached in several places and reported it to the police. Then, it was revealed that the perpetrator of attaching QRIS in the mosque was Iman Mahlil Lubis.

Earned Rp13 Million in Ten Days of Operation

The money successfully collected by Iman from this practice reached Rp13,060,000. The funds were collected in bank accounts and digital wallets from April 1 to April 10, 2023.

"Until now, the funds collected in the application controlled by the suspect amount to Rp13,060,000," said Auliansyah.

However, Auliansyah emphasized that the amount is still likely to increase. Because the investigators will further investigate the suspect regarding this fraud case.

"It is suspected that there are more than one account. We are still investigating to determine the exact total," said Auliansyah.

Using Three Recipient Accounts

Auliansyah explained that the suspect used three different accounts to collect donations from people after scanning his own QRIS or QR Code.

"Currently, we have found three recipient accounts," said Auliansyah. "The QRIS was obtained or created through the Youtap and Pulsabayar applications by MIML and then printed as stickers," he added.

Attached in 38 Locations, Not Only in Mosques

Auliansyah explained that the QRIS was first printed in March 23, 2023. At that time, the suspect was looking for locations to attach it by overlaying it on the original sticker, making it appear to come from the mosque administrators.

"We are still developing the case. It turns out that there are other QRIS owned by the suspect that have not been attached yet, but we don't know where the locations are," he explained.

His actions were first carried out on April 1, 2023, in banks, mosques, ATMs, and gas stations. Eventually, by the end of early April 2023, it had been distributed to 38 locations.

"So, if there is a mosque QRIS, the suspect would attach it on top of the existing mosque QRIS. Then, it was also attached next to the existing QRIS or on other walls that already had QRIS or attached to new places where there was no QRIS yet," he said.

Continuing Investigation and Supervision with External Parties

Auliansyah stated that the investigation against the suspect is still ongoing. This includes supervision efforts that will collaborate with external parties regarding the creation of QRIS.

"It is still too early for us to provide information to the public, and we are still developing the case," he explained.

"Regarding the regulations for creating QRIS, there may be other authorized institutions that will convey it. So, how the requirements and obligations mechanism works may be explained by other institutions," he added.

Prison Threat

For his actions, the suspect is charged with multiple articles, starting from Article 28 paragraph 1 in conjunction with Article 45a paragraph 1 and/or Article 35 in conjunction with Article 51 paragraph 1 of Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning amendments to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions and/or Article 80 and/or Article 83 of Law Number 3 of 2011 concerning Fund Transfers and/or Article 378 of the Criminal Code.

"With a prison threat of more than five years," said Auliansyah.
