The Rise of Electric Vehicles, What is the Fate of the Engine Lubricant Industry?

Dream - The Indonesian government is currently promoting the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, which is expected to become the main mode of transportation in the country.

This plan also affects the increasing production of electric and hybrid vehicles in the national automotive market. The government has recently provided subsidies for people who buy electric motorcycles.

Based on data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), sales of battery-based electric vehicles (BEV) in 2022 skyrocketed to 10,000 units, compared to only 600 units the previous year.

When it comes to electric vehicles, they no longer require engine lubricants because they use lithium batteries to store energy, and the electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy without the need for combustion engines and engine lubricants.

So, as electric vehicles become more popular, what is the fate of the engine lubricant or oil industry?

Market Development Director of PT ExxonMobil Lubricants Indonesia (EMLI), Sri Adinegara, stated that his company is not too worried even though electric vehicles do not require engine lubricants.

He is optimistic that the oil lubricant industry will still be needed for a considerable amount of time. Sri also believes that the development of electric vehicles in Indonesia has not yet had a significant impact.

"Based on our research, we still see that the development has not had a significant impact on Indonesia. So we are still confident that lubricants for four-wheeled vehicles with combustion engines will still be needed for a considerable period of time," said Sri after the launch of Mobil1 lubricant with Triple Action Power+ in South Jakarta on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

In the same event, PT ExxonMobil Lubricants Indonesia (PT EMLI) through its Mobil Lubricants brand introduced its latest synthetic engine lubricant product, Mobil1 with Triple Action Power+.

Sri stated that the product was inspired by their collaboration with the Oracle Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team to provide the best formulation to support optimal engine performance, high-temperature protection, and cleaning of combustion residue or oil sludge to keep the engine like new.

"We have tested our Mobil1 engine lubricant in laboratories, on the road, and on tracks that replicate some of the toughest and most extreme conditions in the world," he said.

Mobil1 Triple Action Power+ is available in two viscosity grades, 0W-20 and 0W-40, recommended for gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines.

Its advantages include producing powerful and durable engine performance, providing 30X more effective high-temperature protection, preventing 99.9 percent of harmful acid contaminants that can damage the engine, and improving fuel efficiency by up to 8.4 percent.

Furthermore, Mobil1 Triple Action Power is also available in two viscosity grades, 5W-30 recommended for gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines, and 5W-50 recommended for gasoline and diesel engines, with the advantage of providing performance to keep the engine like new.

It also provides 10X more effective high-temperature protection and cleans engine dirt with active cleaning agents.
