Feeling Tortured when Seeing the Pleasure of the Residents of Heaven

The feeling experienced by the inhabitants of hell is explained by Ustadz Raehanul Bahraen as when many people are suffering and they will feel tortured when they see others in pleasure. This is called hasad.

This is also felt by the inhabitants of hell, where they feel even more tortured when they see the residents of heaven eating and drinking. Meanwhile, they are thirsty and hungry.

يَا قَوْمِ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا مِن بَعْدِ مَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِمُ الْكِتَابُ مِن بَعْدِ مَا كَانُوا يَهْدُونَنَا فَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (QS.Al-A'raf: 50)

The Gratitude of the Residents of Heaven

Then, what kind of feeling is experienced by the inhabitants of heaven? Of course, it is the opposite of what the inhabitants of hell feel. The inhabitants of heaven feel very grateful because they have been saved from the severe torment in hell. They can also feel extraordinary pleasure in heaven.

They can even gather with good people, both those they used to know and those they didn't. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of hell feel very regretful for what they have done in the past during their lifetime. For example, when someone invited them to do good, but they refused.

This is explained in the words of Allah SWT through Surah Al-Mulk verse 10:

وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ (QS.Al-Mulk: 10)

Then, the regret of the inhabitants of hell during their lifetime is also explained in the Quran through Surah Al-Furqan verses 27 - 29:

وَيَوْمَ يَعَضُّ الظَّالِمُ عَلَىٰ يَدَيْهِ يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي اتَّخَذْتُ مَعَ الرَّسُولِ سَبِيلًا يَا وَيْلَتَىٰ لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أَتَّخِذْ فُلَانًا خَلِيلًا لَّقَدْ أَضَلَّنِي عَنِ الذِّكْرِ بَعْدَ إِذْ جَاءَنِي ۗ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِلْإِنسَانِ خَذُولًا (QS.Al-Furqan: 27 - 29)

Deeds to Avoid the Torment of Hell

Here are some practices that can be done to avoid the torment of hellfire:

Believe in Allah SWT and Prophet Muhammad SAW

As a Muslim, one must believe wholeheartedly in Allah SWT and Prophet Muhammad saw. By believing in them, we will be kept away from the painful fire of hell. This is explained in the following hadith:

"Whoever believes that there is no god but Allah and that Prophet Muhammad saw is His messenger, then Allah SWT will make the fire of hell forbidden for him."

Do Good to Others

If you do not want to feel the pain of hellfire, then do good to others without considering who that person is. This is explained in the following hadith:

"Shall I not inform you of those who are forbidden from the touch of the fire of hell? They are those who always do good to others, are kind and friendly, and are happy to help others."

Perform the 5 Daily Prayers

Performing the five daily prayers is a duty of every Muslim. If one neglects it, then they will bear the sin and the torment of hellfire in the hereafter. As explained in the following hadith:

"Whoever guards the four units of prayer before Dhuhr and the four units after it, then Allah SWT will make hell forbidden for him."

Give Charity

Islam commands its followers to give charity to those who are in need. Giving charity not only lightens someone's burden, but it is also a form of worship that can protect someone from the fire of hell. As mentioned in the following saying of the Prophet Muhammad saw:

"Protect yourselves from the fire of hell, even if it is only by giving a piece of date as charity."
