Dream - Pregnancy tends to make mothers more extra careful in doing many things. One of the scariest things for pregnant women is the appearance of blood spots or bleeding during pregnancy.
"Perhaps mothers immediately think that it is a sign of miscarriage. Relax, pregnant mothers, the appearance of blood during pregnancy on underwear is not always a sign of miscarriage."
"Indeed, in some cases bleeding or spotting can be a symptom of miscarriage, but it is not an absolute thing. It could be due to other factors and the fetus condition is fine. 'Bleeding can occur in a completely healthy pregnancy. In fact, many people experience bleeding in the vagina, especially in the early weeks of pregnancy,' said Zev Williams, a specialist obstetrician and gynecologist as well as the Head of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division at Columbia University."
According to research published in the American Academy of Family Physicians, nearly 1 in 4 pregnant women will experience bleeding during the first trimester, but only about half of those cases will result in a miscarriage.
Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy can be considered normal and does not always cause concern.
Several types of bleeding can be caused by embryo implantation into the uterine wall (most commonly occurring on the day of expected menstruation), presence of infection in the body, or irritation (such as from sexual intercourse through the vagina). "One of the most common causes of bleeding during pregnancy is the 'time gap' before the placenta is fully formed. Before the placenta starts to form around 12 weeks, the ovaries that release the egg provide the main source of hormonal support for pregnancy," said Elizabeth Nowacki, an obstetric and gynecology specialist at St. Vincent Fishers Hospital in Fishers, Indiana.
Bleeding that occurs at the end of pregnancy—especially in the second or third trimester—can be caused by various factors that do not lead to miscarriage, such as cervical irritation or even cervical changes.
"Sometimes, the outer part of the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina, can experience bleeding or there can be bleeding in the space between the placenta and the uterus, which usually resolves on its own," said Dr. Williams.
A little bleeding, especially if accompanied by the discharge of fluid like mucus, can also be a sign of early labor. It is recommended that the mother not panic and immediately consult a doctor if spotting or bleeding occurs during pregnancy.
Bleeding caused by a miscarriage that is about to occur or a chemical pregnancy (a pregnancy that cannot be sustained) can also be characterized by blood spots and then turn into a heavier flow with visible clots and a dark red color, similar to a heavy menstrual period. On the other hand, implantation bleeding may appear as the discharge of brown or lighter-colored fluid without clots. This flow is lighter and only lasts for a few hours to several days.
"For miscarriage, bleeding usually occurs accompanied by cramps and pain, as well as the discharge of tissue through the vagina. Although vaginal bleeding during pregnancy does not always indicate a problem, the mother should consult a doctor immediately to prevent unwanted things from happening. Take note of when the bleeding starts and what activities may contribute to the bleeding. Use a pad or pantyliner (not a tampon) for absorption and as a tool to measure the amount of bleeding.
