Dream - Some pregnant women experience many unusual complaints during pregnancy. Nausea and headaches as well as vomiting, including complaints experienced by many pregnant women.
Well, there is one complaint that not everyone may experience, which is severe itching in the legs. There may be pregnant women who do not experience nausea or headaches, but instead they are attacked by itching in the legs.
The itching condition for pregnant women is known as pregnancy cholestasis, a liver disease that can cause itching in the hands and feet during pregnancy. Why Are Feet Very Itchy When Pregnant? There are several different reasons why feet feel itchy during pregnancy. Such as hormones, increased sweat production, and experiencing skin conditions such as psoriasis. This condition is not serious and can be managed with safe medications for pregnant women.
"The hormonal changes during pregnancy are one of the most common causes of itchy feet. Hormonal changes can affect nerve endings, making them more sensitive and prone to itching," said Cindy M. Duke, MD, fertility specialist."
Pregnancy also causes your skin to stretch, which can lead to dehydration and loss of moisture, both of which can make the skin of pregnant women feel itchier. Many pregnant people find that their feet become flatter. "A wider surface area of the feet can cause them to become drier and sweatier, which can lead to itchy feet," says Dr. Duke.
The other skin condition that can occur during pregnancy is PUPPP (papular urticarial pregnancy pruritus and plaques). PUPPP is not considered serious or dangerous for the baby, but it can be very uncomfortable. It usually appears as an itchy rash on the abdomen and can spread to the thighs, arms, and buttocks.
Cholestasis Triggering Itching
In some cases, itchy feet during pregnancy is caused by a condition called pregnancy cholestasis. This is because pregnancy hormones trigger liver dysfunction, which leads to the accumulation of bile in the liver and bloodstream.
The effect is causing very itchy feet and hands. Cholestasis can be dangerous for the baby, so it is important to treat it. If the itching in the feet worsens and also occurs in other areas of the body, it is important to consult a doctor immediately. Cholestasis, also known as intrahepatic pregnancy cholestasis (ICP) or obstetric cholestasis, is a liver condition that affects about one or two out of every 1,000 pregnant mothers.
"This also has the potential to cause itching during pregnancy. Especially if the mother experiences itching during pregnancy on the legs and hands."
"Cholestasis occurs due to a decrease or cessation of the liver's ability to process bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver," said Neha Singla Jani, DPM, AACFAS, a foot disease expert at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists. According to Jani, cholestasis usually occurs towards the end of pregnancy and can be experienced throughout the body or in specific areas. If the itching is limited to certain parts of the body, the hands and feet are the most common areas. The intensity of itching tends to increase and decrease, and often worsens at night, causing sleep disturbances. There is no rash in cholestasis, only itching."
To relieve itching during pregnancy, you can soak in warm or cold water, apply cold compresses, and make sure to frequently change your socks. Dry feet can cause itching, using moisturizer can help. If pregnant mothers experience severe and persistent itching, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. The doctor will provide safe drug therapy to alleviate it so that the mother can be more comfortable. Source: VeryWell Family
