Excessive Screen Time Can Trigger Emotional Development Disorders in Children

Dream - The use of gadgets in children is often advised by experts. This is because the use of gadgets in children cannot be arbitrary and without limits.

Although difficult to limit, the use of gadgets or screen time over a long period of time in children can still have an overall negative impact.

Excessive Screen Time Can Trigger Emotional Development Disorders in Children

This was affirmed by Pediatric Specialist, Mesty Ariotedjo, through her recent Instagram post. She presented research that revealed excessive screen time increases the risk of causing a 30% disturbance in emotional development in children.

Excessive Screen Time Can Trigger Emotional Development Disorders in Children

Every 1 hour of excessive screen time, a child's aggressiveness will increase by 6%. So if a child exceeds screen time for 3 hours, the increase in aggressiveness reaches 24%.

"Screen Time Duration Limit"

Mesty expressed that children under 2 years old are not recommended to use gadgets other than video calls. TV, iPad, and large screen gadgets other than mobile phones are also not recommended to be exposed to children under 2 years old. This is a recommendation from IDAI (Indonesian Pediatric Association).

"While children aged 2-5 years old are allowed to use gadgets for a maximum of 1 hour per day, excluding video calls."

"Why are Video Calls Allowed for Children?"

The use of gadgets for video calls is allowed because children can still interact with others, so the duration is not limited. Meanwhile, using gadgets to watch or play games for a long time will only stimulate the child in one direction.

"Children who have excessive gadgets from an early age are already accustomed to one-way stimulation in various fields, thus losing the opportunity to build interaction, two-way communication, and socialize."
"ujar Mesty." translates to "said Mesty."

Excessive stimulation on gadgets such as rapid movements, sounds, and lights at the same time makes it harder for children to control their impulses or emotions. That is why children are not encouraged to play gadgets without clear time limits.

"Additional Suggestions"

Some other pediatricians suggest that the provision of gadgets at an early age, such as 2-5 years old, should be in the form of large-screen devices, such as iPad and TV.

This aims to maintain the ability to focus children. In addition, the use of gadgets should also be under parental guidance to ensure that the consumed content is appropriate.
