Dream - Birth is a blessing in life. In celebrating it, every region and country has different traditions. Not excluding the royal members.
"They also have their own tradition to welcome new members in the family. There are several traditions of the birth of a baby in the British Royal family, which apparently used to be mandatory and are now not maintained."
The presence of descendants in a Kingdom is indeed a crucial matter, as the baby born may become the future ruler. With the development of time, the Kingdom of England has also made adjustments. There are several childbirth traditions that were once practiced but are no longer, and vice versa. Curious about what they are?
1. Giving Birth in Front of Many People
"In general, a mother will give birth in a room filled with doctors and nurses to assist. This is different for women in the English kingdom in the past."
Especially those who give birth to direct descendants of the King and Queen. To ensure that the baby born is indeed a legitimate descendant of the King/Queen, witnesses were needed in the past. Therefore, the woman who will give birth will be placed in a spacious room and seen by several people as witnesses. This was not only done in the Kingdom of England, but also in the Kingdom of France in the past. For example, Marie Antoinette, who gave birth in front of 200 people in her private chamber.
2. Giving Birth at Home
We often think that a royal noblewoman will give birth in a hospital, without considering any costs because of her power.
Apparently, in the Middle Ages, most noblewomen of the English royal family actually gave birth in a Palace that was equipped with a special team for the comfort of the mother. The late Princess Diana was the first person to break this tradition as she gave birth to her son, Prince William, in a Hospital.
3. Oath of Midwives
"Not only involving the mother, this tradition also involves the midwives who assist the childbirth process at the Palace."
"All midwives must swear not to steal anything, including baby placenta as a keepsake, which is often considered something used in magical rituals."
4. Mother is not allowed to breastfeed
Breastfeeding is a part that may be anticipated by prospective mothers. Unfortunately, this does not apply to women of the British Kingdom in the past because it was not considered their responsibility of the kingdom.
Sadness, in the past women in the Kingdom were considered to have the sole duty of giving birth to as many noble descendants/ Kings as possible. Breastfeeding activity was considered to hinder this. Therefore, babies in the English kingdom did not receive breast milk from their mothers. Report by Monica Alycia Mutiara/ Source: Times of India
