Dream - The increasing number of pneumonia cases in children in China is causing concern throughout the country. Apparently, the increase in cases is also happening in the Netherlands. The Dutch health agency reported that from November 13 to 19, there were 103 cases of pneumonia in the Netherlands per 100,000 children aged between 5 and 14 years old.
The following translation is provided while preserving the HTML tags: "The number increased from 83 in the previous week. The data is according to the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (NIVEL). This figure represents a significant increase compared to the peak of the flu season in 2022 when the country recorded 58 cases of pneumonia per 100,000 children."
The case also increased among children aged 4 years and below in the Netherlands, from 124 to 145 per 100,000 in the same period.
China previously experienced an increase in cases of pneumonia in children and other unexplained respiratory diseases, hence it was called mysterious pneumonia.
ProMED, the global digital disease surveillance system, reports that hospitals in China - especially in Beijing - have been "flooded with sick children" as a result of the pneumonia outbreak. At a press conference on November 13, officials from the National Health Commission of China blamed this surge on the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, as it is the first flu season since the country relaxed its strict lockdown policies.
Chinese health officials also linked this increase to the spread of other infectious diseases. Including the flu, RSV, SARS-COV-2, and a bacterial infection called mycoplasma pneumoniae, according to a statement on the World Health Organization (WHO) website.
On November 22, WHO said it requested "additional epidemiological and clinical information" from China - as well as laboratory results from children affected.
"We have also requested further information regarding the latest trends in the circulation of known pathogens, including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and mycoplasma pneumoniae, as well as the burden on the current healthcare system," stated the official statement.
To reduce the risk of respiratory disease transmission, WHO recommends that individuals in affected areas always receive the latest vaccination, maintain distance from sick people, stay at home when sick, seek medical care if necessary, wear masks as needed, and regularly wash hands.
Marc Siegel, a clinical medicine professor at NYU Langone Medical Center, said that he is somewhat skeptical of China and WHO's statement that "everything is fine."
He thought that this phenomenon might be the same as what the US experienced last year, which he referred to as "immune gap". "Lockdown was carried out throughout 2022, and when the lockdown was lifted, all upper respiratory viruses - RSV, influenza, COVID - re-emerged," said Siegel. Another potential problem is that China has experienced an increase in the spread of mycoplasma. Mycoplasma pneumoniae itself is a bacterium that can cause diseases by damaging the respiratory system layers (throat, lungs, trachea). Source: FoxNews.
