Prayer for Orphans, Read while Lovingly Caressing Their Heads

Dream - One of the traditions closely related to the Muslim community in Indonesia is giving alms to orphans during the month of Muharram. This tradition is based on a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW that expresses the virtue of the day of Ashura specifically and the month of Muharram in general.

"Whoever fasts on the day of Ashura (the 10th of Muharram), Allah will give him a reward of a thousand angels and the reward of ten thousand martyrs. And whoever touches the head of an orphan on the day of Ashura, Allah will elevate his status with every hair that he touches."

The above hadith is the only evidence that specifically explains the recommendation to touch the head of an orphan or give charity to them in the month of Muharram. The hadith mentions that there is a great reward for those who care for and love orphans in that month. This hadith actually received a lot of criticism from scholars. Ibn al-Jauzi, a specialist in false hadiths, included this hadith in his book al-Mawdhu'at.

"Liar Narrator"

According to him, in this hadith there is a narrator who lies and is known as a fabricator of hadith. He is Habib bin Abi Habib. Ahmad bin Hanbal considered him a liar. Meanwhile, according to Ibn 'Adi, Habib bin Abi Habib is a fabricator of hadith. (Ibn Jawzi, al-Mawdhu'at, [Madinah, al-Maktabah as-Salafiyyah: 1386 H], volume 2, page 203)

Encouragement to Love Orphans

Although so, it does not mean that the tradition of giving alms to orphans in the month of Muharram has no basis. Many hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) explain the importance of giving alms to orphans in general. In fact, we are commanded to give alms to orphans wherever and whenever, without being bound by place and time.

Rasulullah SAW said in his hadith: "I and the one who takes care of an orphan will be like this in paradise." He gestured with his index finger and middle finger, spreading them apart. (Narrated by Bukhari)

1. Prayer for Orphans when Caressing Their Heads

When Sahabat Dream caresses the head of an orphan, it is recommended to recite the prayer mentioned by Imam al-Munawi in the book Faidul Qadir as follows:
جَبْرَ اللهُ يُتِمُّكَ وَجَعَلَكَ خَلَفًا مِنْ أَبِيكَ
Meaning: "May Allah cover your orphanhood and make you a good replacement for your father." (al-Munawi, Faidh al-Qadir, [Egypt, al-Maktabah at-Tijariyyah al-Kubra: 1356 H], volume 1, page 108)

2. Prayer for Orphans while Hosting Them

There are many ways we can do to help orphans. Such as treating them with food at home. Treating orphans is believed to bring many blessings as mentioned in the previous hadith.

When hosting an orphan, recite the following prayer: "O Allah, grant me sustenance in the form of love and care for the orphan, providing food and spreading peace, and companionship with noble people, with Your nobility. O refuge for those who hope."
