Based on the findings of the Hakudo Institute of Life and Living ASEAN (HILL ASEAN), the dynamics of families in Southeast Asia in 2024 are influenced by several factors. Among them are improvements in the economic field that support a new approach in the financial sector, the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world in 2019, as well as awareness of freedom, privacy, and mental health that encourage the growth of individualism.

"Previously, we used to always force especially as parents that we have to be together or do everything together. Children or wives don't have a choice. The individualism now is actually still together with them, but there is respect."

In 2014, HILL ASEAN conducted a study on families. We realize that in the past 10 years, many changes have occurred in society. Family is also the core of society and everything starts from the family. From the study, HILL ASEAN reveals new values of families in Southeast Asia.

"Ten years ago, technological advancements such as social media and video calls allowed families living far apart to stay connected continuously. However, this constant connection turned out to be a burden."

That makes family members now choose to share information according to requests and choose the most relevant time or topic. This change turns out to strengthen, not weaken, family bonds because they utilize social media platforms to keep each other updated.

Children are symbols for realizing family creativity. Their uniqueness is important for families in Southeast Asia because they can serve as role models for other families. To be unique, families will utilize various platforms, choose different activities from others, and adapt traditions to showcase their family's uniqueness.

In the family, there is always 'me in us'. Based on the driving factors of family dynamics in Southeast Asia, economic development and individualism apparently lead to an increase in respect for privacy and autonomy in society.

This change makes parents in Southeast Asia prioritize teaching their children critical thinking and giving them greater freedom to make choices. By doing so, they can fulfill the aspirations of previous generations of parents that were previously unattainable.

The current parenting style has become more 2.0. This means self-development, happiness, and guidance. Unlike the stricter parenting methods in the past, Southeast Asian families are now seen not only as an investment or insurance for the future of their family members, but also as a source of growth and happiness.
