In Portugal, archaeologists discovered an Islamic 'ribat' mosque as part of the ruins of a Roman sanctuary dedicated to the Sun and the Sea. The archaeological site of Alto da Vigia, located near Praia das Maçãs on the Sintra coast, reveals the existence of a second mosque from the 11th to 12th century.
