Dream - Advising is a form of reminding someone towards a better direction. This is also taught in Islam to advise each other towards goodness. However, advising others cannot be done as one pleases. Instead, there are etiquettes that are important to be observed by Muslims. The existence of etiquettes in advising is to prevent the person being advised from feeling embarrassed or cornered. Because in advising others, it is important to also protect the feelings of that person. Therefore, goodness can be conveyed well without harming either party.
Then, how is the etiquette of advising people in Islam? Here is the explanation as summarized by Dream through various sources.
"Advising is a good attitude that is taught in Islam. Therefore, one must pay attention to its etiquettes. Here are some etiquettes of advising others in Islam that friends of Dream need to know:"
One of the manners of advising others is by intending to seek the pleasure of Allah SWT. Because advising is a form of good deed that will be accepted by Allah SWT if the intention is also good. The Prophet Muhammad said: "Indeed, every action depends on its intention, and indeed, every person will only get what he intends." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)
"Advising is a form of teaching that exists in the religion of Islam. Therefore, there are laws that must be followed by Muslims. In fact, in Islam, it is also taught how to face an evil act. The Prophet Muhammad said: 'Whoever among you sees an evil act, let him change it with his hand. If he cannot, then with his tongue.'"
"If one is unable to do so, let them denounce it in their heart, and that is the weakest form of faith." (HR. Muslim) Through the above hadith, it explains that someone who is not able to denounce wrongdoing with their hands is not allowed to force themselves to do so. Even if they have good intentions.
The next etiquette when advising others is by doing it in secret. In other words, Dream's friend can invite the person to have a private conversation or just the two of them. So, it is not advising them when in the midst of many people. This is so that the goal of advising can truly be achieved. In addition, this method also prevents someone from feeling embarrassed. As Imam Asy Syafi'i said:
"Give me advice when I am alone. Avoid giving advice in the midst of a crowd. Indeed, giving advice in the midst of people is considered an insult that I do not like to hear. If you contradict and refuse my advice, then do not be angry if I do not follow your words."
When advising others, Dream's friends must use gentle and polite words. It can be imagined when the person we advise makes a mistake, and we advise them with anger and corner them. Instead, it will make that person feel very sad, and even create a feeling of dislike.
Therefore, advising someone must be polite and gentle. The Prophet Muhammad said, "Every gentleness that exists in something will surely adorn it. And it will not be removed from something except that it will worsen it." (HR. Muslim)
When advising others, it is important to find the right time. That's why we need to be able to see the condition of the person who will be advised. Whether they are feeling annoyed, sad, disappointed, or angry. In such conditions, it is better not to give advice yet. Because it will only make their mood worse. For example, you can start talking to them when they have calmed down.
Ibnu Mas'ud once said, "Indeed, there are times when the heart is enthusiastic and easily accepts, and there are times when it is lethargic and easily rejects. So, invite the heart when it is enthusiastic and easily accepts, and leave it when it is lazy and easily rejects."
When giving advice, do not force someone to accept your advice. Because the purpose of advising is to show the right path. Not to command them. So, when advising, you must be open-minded and not expect too much that your advice will be immediately accepted well by that person.
In advising someone, it is important to have knowledge. Do not just rely on assumptions without a strong foundation. As Allah SWT said in Surah Al-Isra verse 36: "And do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned." (QS. Al-Isra: 36)
